Auto Writers Gush Over New Ford Ranger

Well the new Ranger is out and the automotive press is hyper ventilating. About what exactly? Am I the only one who is shocked at the dated, plain, pedestrian styling? Hearing quotes like "Ford Raises the Bar Too High", "The Ranger Wallops the Competition", "Ranger gives leader Tacoma a Beatdown", "A Whole New Ballgame"...and watched a couple of Fast Lane Truck vids and this is it? This is what Ford loyalists have been waiting 4 years for? With the circa 80's melted look and essentially a warmed over global version of what the rest of the civilized world already has with required U.S. safety requirement features and interior appointments sought after by the American market, why the excitement? Is it the cheap, generic hard plastic interior? Is it the 23 MPG combined? Or is it the high price and the small center console? The slam-down tailgate? Or the little infotainment screen? The elimination of the manual? The one engine 2.3 Ecoboost? The thin paint and crude metalwork? Sorry, I just don't get it.

After seeing all of this marketing drama unfold over the last few weeks, I appreciate my Tacoma that much more. Maybe Nissan's worried but I suspect the boys and girls over at Toyota are smiling.

I saw an article that said to change the oil on the new Ranger you have to remove the front tire, remove an access panel held on with several plastic clips just tp get at the filter and then remove yet another access panel held on with plastic clips to get at the drain plug. If that is the case that in itself would be a deal breaker for me.

Not to change the subject but.... have you seen the ads for the new tailgate for GMC/Chevy?
1-Pretty sure it will only be part of a very expensive package
2-Nothing else to tout on the truck but the tailgate?
3-Wonder what Toyota will try to "top that" with and will it retrofit?

I did see that. And I instantly thought "man I bet that will be expensive to replace when it inevitability breaks"

I have a friend working in TX right now that just had his F250 platinum pearl tailgate stolen and said it'll cost around 3k to replace everything... I said I think I'd put a base model tailgate on it... haha

You beat me! I was just about to post this! Haha!

.3 mpg better and 5 seconds faster isn't very impressive for all the hype...
What happens when the Ford hits 30,001 miles and the valve seals start leaking or the tranny goes into reverse... sometimes? Meanwhile, the Tacos life is just emerging from its infancy.:) I suspect the 0.3 mpg and the 5 seconds will be looong forgotten by then.
