Auto Writers Gush Over New Ford Ranger

So I test drove one of the new Rangers because the dealership in town had some.
I have to say that the truck is amazingly comfortable up front and in the back seat. And the 2.3 ecopoop will run like a scalded dog. The truck handles well and has a decent turn radius. There’s also great visibility on all sides with few blind spots.
The dealership had two. One for $35k that had very few options but did have the trail control and terrain select. (Like an SR Tacoma with an off-road package). The upper models seem to run $2-3k more than a similarly equipped Tacoma.
It has the auto shut off on the motor where it cuts off when the motor sets idle for any period of time (like at a red light). You can turn it off, but that is the most annoying thing I’ve ever seen and it has to be turned off every time you start the truck.
That auto shutoff is enough to make it a deal breaker.
Overall I’m pretty impressed with the truck. I’ll stick with my Taco though.

I looked at the new Rangers. My son drives new f-250 plowing snow and has nothing but problems with these new trucks. I worked for a company that was a ford supplier.... I’m sure the new ranger is a nice truck. Just not willing to deal with this company after owning a tundra and tacoma

Thanks for the review :)
One of the rental cars I had during my rear end leaking ordeal had that shut off feature. Drove me crazy. You could turn it off but when you started the engine back up it was back on. They should have made it the other way. It is always off unless you turn it on.

My wife's X3 BMW ,Has that in the economy mode which she uses ,I run it in sport mode much more fun to drive .Just is a weird feeling when it shuts off but all the accessories are still running like heat , wiper etc. Its strange but it gets 30 mpg when in that mode .Makes up for when I drive it and the turbo is always spoiling up lol.and you have to shut it off in stop and go it 'll drive you nuts

But then YOU would be in control! [emoji849]

Probably has to do with keeping their fuel economy rating.

I can’t stand it. My wife had a Jeep Cherokee that did it. It messes with your head when your car stops.

Think of all the extra revenue to be had in selling replacement starters.

And batteries.
My wife’s Edge ate the Motorcrap that it came with in just over 2 years. And that’s no start/stop crap. I can’t imagine them spending a penny more that that POS.

SMH

If you Google it it supposed to not use the starter because I thought the same thing .its pretty complex system hope that sh#t don't break lol
I’m still holding my breath on the “Intelligent” AWD. I’ve watched the dash cartoon while driving and it’s kinda expensive scary if it breaks.

Ford needs all the help it can get with it's piss poor fuel mileage. I can't find anything on the net that explains how their stop/start engine works. I wonder what keeps you warm on the way to work in the city when it's bumper to bumper traffic and it's 14 degrees outside with a 10 mph breeze?

Here's how the Ford start/stop feature works. It uses a starter and battery.

Johnson Controls has a manufacturing/distribution hub not 2 miles from here. I’ve seen them expand twice in the last couple of years. Now I know why.
Now about the life of those “special” batteries....I think I’ll just stick with idling at stop lights.

My friend just came back from Greece , and had rented a small mercedes and he said when you stop on a hill the brakes holds til you start letting the clutch out and then it releases the brake ! Cool ? Maybe ? No more e-brake holds on hills !

I remember reading years ago the most pollution an engine in good running order puts out is at startup. The very most at cold start up (rich mixture, poor atomization) and the next most pollution is upon hot start. I guess pollution is important until there is money to be made.

That is why I always laugh about the Prius people 'saving the environment.' How much pollution is created in the manufacture of electricity to charge your environment saving vehicle every day? And second, but not the least, how much pollution is created by the manufacture AND DISPOSAL of those lithium Ion batteries that your environment saving vehicles uses? It's a feel good thing, like saying 'it's for the children.'

Preach!
