What tool box do you have?

It’s called a 63” box but it’s actually 62.5” and that’s from the outside of the lid on both sides. I have 2.5” of the box resting on each side rail but there’s another 2.25” of the box “wings” that look like they should go over the rails if the box was wider. About four of the twelve reviews on the Lowe’s site say the box fits their Tacos great. Maybe my expectations are different. The box claims it’s made for midsize trucks ie tacos, frontiers, Colorado’s etc.
Do any of you know of any other boxes that fit the taco better?

I used to run them too. I miss the usefulness of them but the loss of bed space in a short bed is too much for me.
One reason why I went with the Sport model is because of the long bed (the other reason is that sexy-as-hell skewp;)). I work construction so it’d definitely be nice to have a secure place for tools and not have to load and unload them all the time. But it’s a midsize truck and no matter what some compromise has to be made.

I don’t see to many people running these any more. I use to have one in my old Toyota pickup. It was a Husky brand.
I’m probably being too Goldilocks about this wanting the box that is juuuust right. For $275 I probably shouldn’t complain but you’d think that after years on the market some company would make a toolbox designed specifically for the taco; it’s not like it’s not a popular truck.

It’s the boxes that have become not so popular.

Wonder what has caused the popularity shift? The only thing I can think of - these midsize trucks have such a small pickup bed, owners hate to give up the space. After umpteen years of driving trucks with boxes - I can't figure what people do with their "stuff". Thievery is so bad in some places you can't hardly trust to leave things inside the truck - let alone the bed of the truck.

I think you nailed it; it’s about already limited bed space. I’m assuming that the majority of guys who really need or want a box are going to be in construction, and if that’s the case a full size bed is the way to go anyway. This last weekend I finally got around to start building Mrs Straw a chicken coop for her 4 new chicks but in order to get the material at Lowe’s I had to take out my box. It’s not a big deal but it’s not ideal either. About once a month at least I need to remove the box in order to have the full bed and even then the taco’s bed just isn’t great for space. But on the upside...it’s still a Taco ;)

On my last truck -a Dodge - I used a chest size aluminum box that just fit between the bed rails. To keep some "long" space, I drilled and bolted a pair of angles on the sides to suspend it up off the floor a good bit. So it kept about 8 inches of "long" space underneath. I started out thinking I'd put some sq tube lifts under this little one on the Taco but didn't. Blocking the rear window isn't a big deal to me, cargo is cargo. Goofy headrests blocked it anyway.

Here in Tucson security is big issue and the latches and locks of these current boxes are pathetic. All of the tradesmen at my shop have put steel hasps and padlocks on their aluminum boxes. Mine have steel reinforcements inside as well.
