Which year is good for used?

Hey new member here, with obviously the best username... Can’t believe no one had it!

Anyway, as much as we would love a new Tacoma we can’t justify the cost when we’re saving up to buy land and build a home.
I’ve owned various brands of vehicles including Toyota and I know there are certain year models in every brand and certain models you want to stay away from for different reasons.

For example, the year 2011 Ford diesel had a crappy oil pan. Some genius decided to make it out of plastic that year and it became a known issue that it leaked so I ended up replacing it. The 2007 FJ had issues with the body mounts breaking, etc. Other brands have issues with certain year models, this is common knowledge.

So...Since I’m in the market for a used Tacoma, and I don’t know a lot about them (other than the fact that they are super reliable, great off-road and have awesome resale value) are there any years I should avoid?
Maybe one year model had a lot of recalls?

Our budget is $15k and we just moved to the Sedona Arizona area so 4x4 is mandatory.
We don’t need any luxuries beyond that.
This will be a daily driver and eventually pull a small trailer with a couple of ATVs in it, through the desert sand and snow but we won’t be doing any serious off-roading. I’ve had my fill of pin striping my vehicles and nearly rolling them.

that be true guys. its hard-pressed to find a 4x4 2015 for sale anyways. at least in my back yard. if i were to buy used, and based on reliability, 2015 would be the one i would look for...or maybe a 2014 like TacoTues said. as far as finding a truck for 15k, you are probably looking at a much older second gen with high miles.

by the way Toyota Tacoma, hi and welcome...and heck yeah thats a good handle to have! :)
 
So far all I'm seeing is '05 to '08 models with an average of 150k miles for my budget of $15k to $20k. Great resale value is one thing but Geez. I don't know if I want to spend $20k on a truck with that many miles on it. I mean, say I bought a 2005 Tacoma with 150k. What are some standard repairs I would need to take care of? (aside from brake rotors/pads, tires) I would think maybe a timing belt change would be due at the very least?
I hate the idea of incurring debt but I might have to spend more than I wanted so I can get a truck with less mileage. I currently have a 2011 F250 Lariat 4x4 diesel with NAV, leather, you name it. But it's too much truck for a daily driver. We bought it to tow our fifth wheel camper all over the country which is what we've been doing the last few years but now we're settling down and don't need that much truck. I really hate driving a heavy-duty truck on these wash-boarded dirt roads because it beats me to death. The turning radius is atrocious as well. Blue Book is about $30k on it but with this economy, I'm only expecting $25k on a private sale and $18k to $20k if I trade it in. What I wish would happen is one of you guys reading this post thinks to yourself... "I've been wanting a bigger truck! I should trade this guy even Steven for my 2015 TRD 4x4 Tacoma that only has 40k mi.)"
 
Should be a chain anyway.
Maybe a little front end work and fresh alignment.
All new fluids including brake fluid, and coolant.
If it was serviced properly and not beat on, should be a lot of miles still left in it.
Check rust depending on where it came from, that's a major concern in some areas.
 
that is a fun wish to have! there are 2015s out there for $15 to $20k, but you are looking at some with really high miles, or no 4wd, different pkgs, branded titles, that kind of thing. most 2015 4x4s i've searched with under 100k miles are still going for mid $20 to mid $30k. i'm sure you can find something though. just gotta keep searching. and like BC said, check for frame rust issues. i bet you could get a pretty fair price for your f250, but doing swappsies might be harder to come by. too bad you couldnt raffle it off.
 
Welcome when i was looking in 2018. Most '15 s I looked at were high 20's. So if u find 1 for 15 k buy it. And that was with around 25 -30 k on them .
