Best Cost Effective Way to Improve 3rd Gen Entune Premium

Update: Below are part numbers from Toyota in case you break what I did.
74617-04080-CO - Spord plug Assembly. Which is the lower cover on the passenger grab bar where the 10mm bolt is.
90189-06227- D145 Grommet. This is the green plug in the door that the 10mm bolt holding the speaker threads into.
90467-05172 - These are the red clips in the cover on the dash over the tweeters.
Thanks for sharing. What’s the part numbers on the clips you didn’t break :D

Well.... ok. 90467-05172 - These are the red clips in the cover on the dash over the tweeters. Technically........ I didn't break these clips. One fell in the dashboard. haha. And to be quite honest. I am complete idiot on how I broke the green plugs. I put some dynamat over the speaker holes and the screw holes. Instead of cutting the crew holes out. I just pushed them through it. I was "close enough" when I pushed the bolts back in through the dynamat. NOT.. that's why they went in crooked and damaged the plugs. Anyone with common sense wouldn't have done that. I wasn't going to admit it....... but didn't want anyone else reading these threads to worry about it. I graduated at the bottom of the stereo installtion class here..

Oh.. I didn't really break the cover.. After I ordered it at Toyota, during lunch today, I was looking closer. I found one tab was bent too far.. I pushed it back and it popped back on just fine. Doh! 9 bucks wasted.

Don't be afraid. Do it with normal care and all will be fine.. :)

Thank you/ I picked up my 2017 Tacoma TRD sport, access cab, V6, 6 speed manual today. Drove it all of 15 miles home and hated the sound. Urgh.. Then I found this thread :D

6 new speakers on the way!

Tweeters are INSTALLED! Yep.. huge difference. Shame on Toyota for the factory garbage.

Door speakers will be in Thursday.
Just wait until it’s all in. Your doors will rattle off haha.
Where did you get the door speakers from? Did you do the kickers?

Bass plus 5 (wide open)
Treble plus 2 past center
Mid plus 1 past center
all balance in center
Picture too big to load

I installed my Kicker door and rear speakers (access cab) yesterday. Wow... yep.. WOW... AND DOUBLE SHAME ON TOYOTA FOR THE CRAP THEY SHIPPED THE TRUCK WITH, ok..,rant over.

I used the Crutcthfield kits.

No real problems, but there are a couple of things that might frustrate

- The 6x9 adapter ring holes will not line up on the kicker speakers. You can get two of them aligned (left or right set) then you need to drill two small pilot holes in the adapter for the self-tapping screws to go though. The hole that did align are too big so with use different screws or put a blob of silicone sealer on the back of the screw thread after assembly.
- The supplied wiring harness adapters aren't perfect. The small spade connector on the Kicker is extremely tight fit and easy to bend. Support the terminal when inserting OR.. cut the wire and solder it on.
- The rear speaker adapter requires you to break of all the internal tabs (easy).

Another point. The main doors on the Taco are NOT sealed and designed to drip water out the bottom. My truck has 200 miles on it now, only one overnight rain (when parked) and it was soaked inside both driver and passenger doors. The factory POS "speaker" (spit!) has a water shield on top of it to defect drips; the Kickers do not. The Kicker cones are vastly superior and should be able to take some wet, but I don't like that. Simply drape a piece of 6 mil plastic over the top of the speaker and secure on the face of the door clamping it with the adapter ring. For those of you adding sound damping to the door.. it's going to get wet when it rains and will have a heck of a time drying out. Use closed cell types if possible.

The inside of my doors where wet as well. Poor design IMO. Good idea on the plastic to divert the water from the speakers.

Seriously?!?! I guess I need to jerk my door panels off and check.

Is anyone else getting rattling from the window control panels on both front doors??
I haven’t noticed it. Maybe it’s where you’ve had the door panels off?

It’s when the bass hits with these kickers. I can put my hand on the plastic trim and casing around the window controls and it stops, take my hand away and it rattles/vibrates. I’ve got some thin one sided sticky foam stuff I’m going to try later this week see if I can make it stop.
I was shocked when I saw all the water inside the door though. Should have bought some boat speakers :D

Lol! Maybe boat speakers aren’t a bad idea.
The foam padding should do the trick.

That’s what I’m thinking. I was going to put some sound deadener like dynamat but I haven’t yet. I’m probably going to buy all new clips for the door panel at this point I’m going to have to take them off again and those clips don’t hold well after one time off let alone two or three. I’m going to need to seal the speakers back there with plastic to protect them from water. I’ll be a pro at pulling these doors apart.

Good idea replacing the clips. It may help the rattling too.

I just did this upgrade, front speakers and tweeters,at first i didn’t think there was much difference between the sound of factory and kickers, but after a trip yesterday to see family then breaking in,and ridding down the road they sound great.will be putting back door speakers in after Christmas

3 dollar tray charger slot.jpg 3 dollar tray2.jpg Off topic but anyone needing a console tray can make your own for $2.56. I made one and it works great. Dollar Tree 6.5" x 6.5" x 2" deep tray for $1. Home Depot 1/2" x 3/4" x 1/16" thick aluminum angle x 36" long for $4.27 (enough for 3 trays). Note I have a small phone that fits in the tray.

Awesome. Thanks for sharing. I bought one for like $6 off eBay but it took forever to get it and the one you made looks a lot better.
