Oil filter question

Does the 2017 Tacoma V6 have a spin on or cartridge type oil filter and where is it located? I did not see either when I took a quick look underneath but did I also did not crawl all the way under as I should have.

It's underneath in a housing attached to the engine. You need a special service tool to remove the housing cap. I'll look for pics.

You remove the center bolt and insert the plastic piece to drain the housing then the plastic housing is removed to access the filter element. Change those seals!

Wrench (Many out there but this one looks like it grabs more of the housing:

I'm curious. I don't have a Tacoma yet, but what is the advantage to using a cartridge type oil filter versus a spin on type? Seems like a bunch more trouble to change your oil and filter. There must be a reason why Toyota went to the cartridge type. Any ideas?

Less oil waste.
