ive had a few Toyota Tacoma’s and pickups through the years and stumbled across another.
1988 x can 4x4. It’s a friends truck he finally came off of. Bad news is, he had the motor “rebuilt” last summer and when backing boat in the the water in his backyard the motor started overheating and such, this is after a fresh rebuild. He got pissed, kicked in drivers fender and door and left it. I took it off his ands for 500 bucks. Cab is rust free and decent interior, bed looks like it will need bed sides or a flat bed. I’ve done bolt on things to trucks all my life, full on suspension lifts, turbo kits, replaced timing chains on v6 interference motors. I’m expecting a motor rebuild, if I get a shop to check and mill motor and rebuild the head how difficult would be purchasing a rebuild kit and putting it together myself? Also, I notice a ton of vacuum lines, has anyone had any lu k with deleting a lot of these, basically for emissions?

Is it the 22re? Or the 3.0L V6

It’s not bad. There is one Alan head bolt on the intake manifold side that can be a pain to get to and out but other than that if you’ve put a turbo on and done a timing chain on a V6 the little 22re is going to be no problem. Get a shelving system down, take pictures of the vacuume lines and hoses. I might suggest putting a RV cam or similar racing cam and larger valves in if you’re going to have it out anyways. Give it a little more pep.

Is that considerably more money for parts over stock rebuild kit
Last time I did one was in 2006 if I remember it was less than $200 more total cost but I new a guy. The cam cost about $100 and he did the valves for about $80. That was 1mm over.
You can get a 268 RV cam and run it with the stock valves. It will increase mpg 1-2 and give a little extra at hwy speeds. The 261 will give a little more off the line if you want a little more in town. I’ve ran both and they where a good addition to the 22re and at around $100 if you’re going to be in there anyways it’s worth it IMO.

Very good advice. I will be out around town a good bit but also on the highway for hunting. Still trying to figure out what to do about the bed, dunno if I should flat bed it I can’t seem to find replacement bedsides

That’s tough. I know replacement beds can get expensive if you can even find them. I would check local wrecking yards and Craigslist for wrecked ones on the front sometimes people are parting them out. Otherwise flat bedding it would be the cheapest and probably easiest but doesn’t look the best IMO.
... I seems to have lots of opinions on this thread haha.
