Brake override malfunction

I have a 16 ORDC with 3”/1” lift and 285/70/17 tires.

Recently I have had 6 brake override errors over the last 3 months. My dealer was baffled since I was not part of any recall and they could not duplicate the error since has been intermittent. After further inspection they said it was likely due to a hypertech chip used to recalibrate the speedo. They said it was dangling and possibly bouncing around behind the dash causing this error somehow. I bought my truck from a CA dealer with the lift/tires/wheels already done. Apparently they added the hypertech chip as well. I’ve seen many Tacoma’s on dealer lots already done up like mine so I don’t think it is all that uncommon. I never asked about speedo calibration as I should have or I would have known about this. The selling dealer uses DSI (4wheel parts) for these dealer sold lifted trucks so they are not actually doing the installs.

My current dealer recommends removing this chip and seeing if the errors stop. The error is the same one that causes some trucks to shut down to limp mode so I am concerned and want this fixed.

For the record I only have seen this error while parked after starting. I then shut the truck off and restart then a few seconds of rough idle then all is good for a while.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Anyone using the hypertech speedo recalibrator? I guess it is plausible this could be the cause but I am not sold since I have had the tranny issue, diff leak and still have anomalies with my transmission like others. I figured this was the crank shaft sensor since it idles rough each time I restart after the error. Any thoughts?

Just wanted to share my experience. I pick the truck up tomorrow so we’ll see.

With all the other issues you’ve had that sucks. You had the TSB’s done, tranny problems, the diff Leak now this. I’m curious how many miles do you have on it now? Is Toyota doing anything extra for you? Did they give you an extended warranty or anything for the hassles?

Yeah it’s been a journey! I have 14k miles on her. I did forget to mention that corporate gave me the 8/125 Platinum warranty at no cost. They also gave me a rental car this time too.

I plan on sticking this out. I do feel these issues will be resolved eventually, hopefully before 125k or 8 years, lol.

So are they taking that chip out? You really don’t need the speedo calibrated. It’s only a few MPH difference with the 285/70/17 tires at 60 mph. I didn’t have them recalibrate that. I had them reset my YAW and my PCM. Hoping to get better MPG. It improved it by about 1-2 mpg. I was getting 12-13mpg now I get 13-14mpg in town.
I have been on the same journey as you. They also gave me the same VSA. I’ve got rental cars every time mines been in the shop. I to plan on sticking it out. I wasn’t to sure about it in the beginning but I feel like we have a special relationship now. I’m hoping by 8yrs everything that could or would need to be fixed will be and this truck will last me another 12yrs with no issues. I would like to keep this thing for at least 20yrs. I only drive about 5k a year on it so 20yrs will be over 100k Miles it should last at least that.
Thanks for keeping us posted on your issues. Sites like this help us to get stuff done. Power by numbers.

Yeah I told them to remove the chip and my tech also recommended that as well. Thanks for YAW and PCM advice, I’ll mention that. I’ll take any extra MPG for sure! I feel the same way about what we’ve dealt with and actually want to see it through like you. I too am planning on keeping this rig a long time. I have no doubt these rigs will last. I’ve seen Highlanders with 200k plus on the 3.5l. Hopefully that translates to Tacos too.

I’ll continue to check in with updates. Thanks for the replies.

Eventually I’ll get enough posts here to earn my sticker. [emoji111]️

It’s easy just be more active on some of the fun threads. Look in the off topic category.

I would definitely have the hypertech chip taken out. Out of all the threads I’ve read I haven’t seen that same issue as yours.
Let us know if that fixes it.

DSI does almost every manufactuer’s lift kits and yes they own 4 wheel parts but they come with a 3/36 liftshield parts and labor warranty so they should be able to install a different programmer that works and doesn’t cause issues at no cost if that’s your issue. (I work at a dealership that uses them)

MY 2016 O/R 4X4 DBCB IS IN THE SHOP NOW FOR THE SAME THING.
DID THE CHIP REMOVAL FIX YOUR PROBLEM?

Hey everyone.

I’m having the same errors but my truck it’s not turning on. Any ideas????

I plan on taking it to the dealership. But if I could turn it on, it would be great.
