Love the Truck...Hate the Hood!

Spinal surgery for a staph infection left me over 50% paralyzed below the waist.

At age 70, I was the most active person I know of in my age group...........climbing mountains, grouse hunting, turkey hunting, camping, hiking, fly fishing in rough mountain gorges, rock work, carpentry, etc. The nerve damage left my LEFT foot nearly useless. My right one has some strength. Rehab is working on balance and leg strength, but the left foot refuses to get better.

SO............I had to sell my beloved 1998 Tacoma Extra Cab 4x4. I purchased it new in August 1997 and only placed 79,000 miles on it all these years. I could not work the clutch!!

Anyhow, I purchased a 2017 Tacoma Access cab 4x4 Sport from my fly fishing car dealer friend.

I LOVE the color............Quicksand.

I slept around 10 nights a year in the back of my older truck so strongly prefer the access cab and Full Length bed with a camper cover.

I hate the new electronics and still cannot figure out how to work the GPS.

I miss my manual 4wd stick.

I miss my manual locking hubs.

I Love the ride of the 2017 model.

But the HOOD!! I use my vehicles in the woods and on un-maintained mining and logging roads. I have to be able to see those washed-out gullies, stones, and logs in the road. This "Sport" hood and useless extended front end grill creates a horrible blind spot. The hood sticks up at least 3-4 inches above the level of the fenders and I cannot see the road when first dropping down a steep incline. I can't do anything about the elongated grill area, but can the ridiculously high hood be swapped with another model without major body work?

Thanks in advance and y'all take care, Bo in western NC

Get to know some of the local Taco drivers. Maybe one of the slick hooders would be interested in doing a hood swap with you.

I feel your pain. I suffer from failed lower back surgery and curse the hood on my 18 TRD off road every time I lift it. Perhaps by 2024 Toyota will see fit to use struts or springs to assist in lifting the heavy ass hood.

Aww man. Lol. I got a slick hood on my 19 quicksand, and was thinking about swapping for a sport hood. If only I were back home in NC.

Danged, you moved!!

THANKS, guys! I see that a slick hood can be had..........between Ebay, a body shop, or an individual, I may change mine out at some point down the road. I may have to wait until I win the Lottery. Meanwhile, am going to tough it out.

Y'all take care, Bo

This is the first ride I've owned that I can't judge distance over the hood, and I don't have a scoop.

Every time I pull into a parking spot I'll think I'm perfect...get out and I'm 2 damn feet off. I'm seriously thinking about putting a front camera on it. Several have done it, they make a plug thing that goes into the stereo so you can control it from the mode button on the steering wheel.

OP, you could find great multitudes of people that would love to swap hoods with you. Make sure to get some cash on your end thou.

I saw that kit, and others. But...I just dropped $30K plus on a new 2018 vehicle that has a charging pad for a smart phone that I don't own, but can't design a hood with feckin' springs??? On a 2018 vehicle I should not have to add a hood lifting device that was a stock item on a 1958 VW Beetle. I wrote a letter to Toyota but never received a reply.
Right?! They can add rear doors on their van that lifts automatically when sensing your foot, but no hood assists. SMH [emoji849]

I guess now would not be the time to mention the interior fuse box in a crappy location and no fuse box schematic in the owners manual?

They should put have sensors on the front bumper like the rear .my wife's x3 BMW has ones on front and it makes it nice for parking . I agree it kinda a bitch to see over front .
