Why do Tacomas get poor gas mileage $

It does hold shift a little longer but i really dont see much difference in mpg .i hardly ever use 6th gear even on highway .i never use drive. ECT does make a big difference when u are pulling on highway from ramp .

I've used 6th gear since owning the truck. It runs great in 6th, low rpm while only downshifting to 5th on long uphill grades going 70 mph. Truck acts very much like my 01 4.7 tundra on the highway....just running lower rpm. Tundra always seemed it needed a 5th speed.

True! And probably got better mileage .and the taco is underpowered for 6 .IMO :)
Tacoma underpowered with its 6....certainly the 4cyl. i test drove, but i was pleasantly surprised when i first drove my 6 cyl. truck. Its much more responsive than a friends 2019 v6 auto, but he's screwed it up with a lift and 33 tires. I can't say enough how good my 2020 runs. Very please with it.

Yesterday on the highway ! Not to shabby :) 5th gear in ECT MODE and in S DRIVE !
Thats a hell of a lot better than anything i've towing in the same modes or just driving with an empty truck. Every time I've used ect, or kept it in S5 i get at least a 1 mpg worse fuel mileage. When not towing the D mode is best for me. Have a buddy with a 2019 trd or thats ridden with me on fishing trips, He's always commented how well my truck is tuned vs his. I've been wondering why some are complaining about these trucks while others say they love them....beginning to think manufactured runs are not consistent.

I think it has to do with the learning transmission, if you put up with the initial learning curve it responds well, those that decide to mash the pedal all the the time are the ones with the problem.

Built at Baja plant i believe. Maybe a wednesday truck got 35k on her maybe they get better with more break-?in
A buddies 2019 trd was built at the baja plant while mine was in texas. If you ride in either its like driving 2 different trucks. I think having a 3'' lift and 33 '' tires on his trd really screwed it up as far as the fuel economy, and the way the automatic transmission acts, plus I wonder if being a double cab has some effect being a heavier truck. I've got an access cab. At any rate his truck has a better cool factor when driving around shopping malls.

I noticed today under 40 degrees temp outside the taco mpg drops quite a bit i thought the cold air was supposed the help ? Maybe just fot power . was 17.8 on highway at 36 degrees out .

I’m surprised how low mine is. I did a 200 +/- round trip today, all highway and got 15.2 [emoji53]

Some hills, nothing major at all, it’s north Texas... 38° to 46°
