3rd Gen Factory Accessories Worth Getting

Hi all,

I'm possibly going to be buying a 2018 Tacoma in the near future and am wondering which of the factory accessories are worth getting and which are not. Given that the bed is composite I would likely be getting a bed mat with the truck.

Any comments/suggestions?

Thanks!

Get premium/tech, tow, and JBl for sure. Everything else is meh. Forget steps, sliders aren’t much more expensive.

Thanks for the response.

Being in Canada I don't have a choice but to get the premium/tech and tow packages. They're all included in the TRD sport, but I don't have an option for the JBL system.

How is the oem tonneau cover? Are the D-rings worth getting? Roof rack? etc. I was moreso looking for a comparison of the oem options vs buying aftermarket and installing later.

D rings are in the candian truck. My dealer told me the oem cover is junk and ordered me a bakflip. They are awesome. Just if you get a backflip get the new one that can have the tailgate closed without the top lifted.

My thoughts on this is if you have the money and don’t want to hassle with the searching and finding the things and it’s OEM things that you want then I would order or ask for everything you want from factory.
If you don’t mind researching and buying and building it over time you can find the OEM stuff you want for a little cheaper.
If the things you want are aftermarket like the roof rack or the tonneau cover then don’t waste your money on OEM and get what you want.
I didn’t want their factory tonneau cover. I wanted a Bakflip MX4 so I didn’t get a truck that at the OEM one.
I wanted the OEM bed mat, bed step and a roof rack. The truck I found also had predator side steps, d rigs, rail hooks, exhaust tip, front 3M protective film and mud flaps.
I nagotiated the price down to where I really didn’t pay for any of those upgrades so it was actually cheaper then trying to find them and install them myself.
The OEM running boards or side steps are nice if you’re not an off-road person. Rock sliders are better for that application.
Ultimately it comes down to what you want, your needs for the truck, time and money.

How do you find it seals against the tailgate? Is there any water getting in? Do you have the MX4 (aluminum) or F1 (fibreglass)?

My dad has the one that you have to lift up before closing the tailgate and its a pain.

I have the MX4 aluminum one. There are no issues at the tailgate it is great.
They will all leak at times. Mine has never leaked bad enough to bother me and the one time it did leak bad it wasn’t closed all the way on one side. User error. I have a bed mat and the little drips of water that come down the side of the bed goes under the mat and my stuff stays dry. I have always had plastic bins that I put gear that I don’t want wet into.

Just putting this out there, Ive purchased a few bed mats for various trucks and none of the aftermarket ones fit as nice as OEM. You'll definitely find cheaper but if you want one to just drop in and fit exact then get the OEM mat. They're not impossible to trim, but if you want a perfect factory fit go OEM.. I like having a mat, even on bed liner

Absolutely agree. I’ve had different bed mats in the house past. The OEM Tacoma one is the best I’ve had at holding things in place.

Agree. Love the factory bed mat. I use the D-Rings and front bed wall hoops more than anything. Door sill protectors-cheap and can buy factory Toyota ones on Amazon for $25. Easy install on all 4 doors. I know there are haters but I love my factory tonneau cover. Easy to use, remove, and seals very well. Only a few drops leak in at the corners in heavy rain. Spare tire lock works well. Get yourself a locking gas cap. And don’t forget to keep your tailgate locked. Add a hose clamp on the right hinge too. (pointing down) $3500-5K to replace your gate if it’s swiped!!!

If you’re paying that much for one I’ll sale you one for half haha. Quick search $400 from a dealer. $600-800 all day on eBay.

Thoughts on the TRD exhaust system? Are there any gains in performance or fuel economy? Is there a big difference in sound?

I'm real happy with the OEM bed mat...tried other brands on various vehicles but the Toyota mat seems to fit better and is somewhat heavier. Tonneau covers, I went with "Undercover Elite " series and am very pleased with the quality, fit and design. Somewhat pricey buy I keep my vehicles for a long time and didn't want to mess around with the cheap stuff that I'd have to replace later on. My dealer threw in a set (4) of Weathertech floor mats. They fit very well.

The only accessories I got were the bed mat (which I really like for the price), and the TRD shift knob (which I also like cause it has red accents and my truck is red ;) )

Edit: Also, if you want something specific, ie. a K&N cold air intake, opposed to the TRD one, just mention it to the dealership. They will generally install what you want and it will still be covered under warranty. That's what I did with my levelling kit because I didn't want them f*cking me around if something went wrong.

They will do that if they can.

I’d definitely get the bed mat, as far as exhausted, I prefer the magnaflow catback with K&N CAI. Had my dealer throw in the bed mat and all weather floor mats..have weather tech as well but Toyota mats have a little thicker rubber and look pretty good as well
