2003 Tacoma: 1st gear "bumpy" in 4x4?

Hi,
I have an automatic 2003 Tacoma with the off road package. It has 97K miles and is in pretty great shape. When I am in 4 wheel drive and going slow (first gear), it feels like something is wrong with the transmission or drivetrain. It feels like it would if I was driving an automatic and I was letting the clutch out too late.
This doesn't happen at higher speeds and it doesn't happen in 2-wheel drive.

Does anyone have any suggestions of what might be wrong?

No this is when I am 4-high. I use 4-high to drive around in the winter because I live in a mountain town and the streets are perpetually icy.
