Can someone explain how the 4W Low an 4W High works?

i would like to know exactly how the Tacoma 4W Low and 4W Hi works from a detailed technical point of view. Is the 4W Hi like AWD cars where there is a slip differential? And, assume 4W Low locks in all 4 wheels but how does it work since not all wheels turn at the same rate? Or, what?

Both 4wd options lock the front and rear axles together.

Low range offers low gearing for low speed crawling such as very technical or steep sections.

High is for normal speed 4wd use.
