painting steel wheels

I have a 2009 Tacoma 4x4 with stock steel wheels. They are starting to get very minor rust and some of the factory silver paint is wearing off. Looks like they were primed with a black primer at the factory. Anyone have any suggestions for a durable paint for steel wheels??

Powder coat them.

I was thinking about powder coat...
However, It's my daily driver and don't have a spare ride. I just cannot have the Tacoma on jack-stands for too long :((

If the place isn't busy it only takes about a day to powder coat. I work at a shop in Arizona.

How much does it $$$ for a powder coat job on rims??? I live in a rural part of PA.. so it would be a drive to any powder coat shop.

I was priced 65$ a wheel for black. In CA

Yeah guys..
I agree!! Powder coating is the way to go. Anyone ever use Rustoleum or POR-15 to coat wheels??? Funds are tight :((

Check online. I've never done it but it doesn't hurt to look. I'm sure someone on here can help. Best of luck and post pics if you get them done.

I have had Harley wheels powder coated and it made me sick when scratches start appearing after riding a coup!e thousand miles maybe it was a low quality product but for everyday driver in the rust belt I chose the rattle can method black primer I had sitting round so I needed to use it up and rustolem. If it holds up a coup!e years I will be happy!

Yes. I'm glad I have steelies. looking at a 2012 taco at a dodge stealership with aluminum wheels couple weeks back road salt has not been kind to them and those jack asses sprayed oil substance on a crusty frame that will need to be tended to soon. I have to think the PO never took to Toyota to have it treated or 12s have not been recalled yet?

Honestly, the factory silver paint on the steel wheels does not hold-up well during nasty winters. Road salt and cinders are not kind to them. Industrial grade enamel paint seems to work well. Rustoleum paint&primer seems to work great!! I also had issues with corrosion with the Aluminum wheels on my 2002 Tundra. A tougher finish is needed for trucks.

I agree my 97 taco steelies were real crusty when I sold it in 09 but had hub caps so out of sight out of mind! Cannot wait till retirement and move away to a no road salt state!

At the print shop i have a cnc cutter that will make exact circles for this project. Thanks for that pic. I'll use something like 50pt cardstock. At first it had me thinking "Paint BEFORE buying new tires". But then again, I'll be more apt to be a PIA when they get mounted cause it's my work getting scratched. If the mask fits... wear it. I also saw a post somewhere, suggested the Farm and Tractor line of rustoleum products.

Not a fan of powder coat in new England the salt kills it ! Its just not right in my blood to paint over bare metal .imo I always use metal etching primer on every thing nowadays and I've always had really good results with the duplicolor rim paint it keeps a good finish for a long time .

I like your masking job on the rims its always a pain to tape them I use silver duct tape around it then cut a hole in a black contractor bag to cover the tire but I wipe the bead area with Denatured alcohol before starting sticks better

Those wheels look sharp!

Had a roommate who was ex-Navy who painted his steel wheels by taping off the fenders and coating the sidewalls with Vaseline. Claimed ‘That’s how they taught us how to do that in the Navy.” We used a lot of old shop rags wiping the tires down but never had to pull a wheel.
