Spraying wd40 on frame bad?

I'm spraying wd40 on my frame to clean it up, will it cause any damage? I just don't wanna spray it then find out it destroys a protective layer on the frame or some ****. You guys ever do this?
 
As far as I know...wd 40 is a degreaser...might not be the wisest choice but I'm not sure of that
 
I just power wash during warm spells during the winter. I still get some surface rust..... just keeps the salt from eating more metal. Could the WD40 damage other frame componets???
