Overland builds !

Man I’m dying to do an overland build... but I just don’t have the downtime to go enough and wouldn’t get my moneys worth.

But I’m looking at doing a slight budget build - just to add hauling space for the family camping trips, and the weekend fishing trips.
 
You can do a cheap build and get a headache rack and modify a ladder rack. I cant say my headache rack was cheap(600$) but they have cheaper ones(150-200$). ladder rack set(80$ebay). air bedz air mattress(200-250$). homemade 8×10 canopy(50$) what makes camping in back nice is the inverter which is enough to operate a TV or fan. I pretty much can drive and camp anywhere I want.20180526_102002.jpeg

Depends on size of tent you're looking for. Usually 4wheels parts have their black Friday sale and you can get the smaller smittybuilt rooftop tent for $650 which sleeps two adults fine. Then an RCI bedrack for $695 normal price or wait for one of their sales which gives 15% off. Total cost for that setup is $1200. At the end of the day it's how much use you are going to do versus the cost.
 
What's the advantage of a roof tent over a ground tent for overlanding? Price, weight, and size my 6 person dome tent winner in all three categorues. I want a roof tent because it would be cool,. But aside from cool factor is there something I am missing?

The reason that I kinda want one is that critters can't get to you as easily and the convenience... but... I'm not sure if I can step away from this $87 Amazon tent that I cram a double decker, queen size air bed into... haha 20190420_190725.jpg

The ease of setting up my tent and campsite. Takes me less then 10mins to setup and close up. Off the ground for bugs and critters. No Conduction from being on the ground at night. Being able to still use my truck bed to carry next gear and my great Dane while tent is on top. Being able to store my kill from hunting trips in my truck bed with gear away from trying. To each their own for what style of tents works for them. I've found my RTT has come handy in more cases then before when I used a regular tent.
