Apple CarPlay/Bluetooth Issue???

Hey All,

First time Tacoma owner here- just bought the 2022 TRD Off Road. Been loving almost everything about it with the exception of one thing. When talking to somebody on the phone using apple carplay or Bluetooth, the person on the other end hears a loud buzzing noise in the background. it is best described as a sound similar to a loud A/C unit or somebody running a lawn mower.

Has anybody ever had this problem? I originally assumed it was my phone cause it was kinda old so i bought a new one and it still makes the noise!

Any advice is appreciated. Taking it into toyota next week to look at.

Welcome and congrats. Love that new vehicle smell. I can’t help but very interested in what Toyota has to say.

Hi Bryan, I'm on the same boat. Tacoma TRD 2022 owner since September and have the same problem. On the dealer they have tried everything (resetting, updating all software) and the problem still remains. More than 4 appointments already, and this last one they told me they don't have a plan B. If you are using Bluetooth you can play with Transmit Volume of the phone setting on the radio. Turn it all down and it will reduce significantly the noise. But on CarPlay there is no fix since there is no setting for that. I have been doing a little bit of google search and it seems to be a common problem for a lot of people. Will post if I find anything or find a fix.

Took my 23’ TRD off-road in to the local Toyota dealership mainly to get a paper trail going so that if/when they come up with a fix for that buzzing noise, I’ll be covered. The techs even tested the mic on a brand new truck that just came off the delivery truck yesterday & also found the same issue. Hopefully more people take theirs in so Toyota can see it’s a wide spread issue & get us a fix. Until then, I’m not using CarPlay to make calls, only regular Bluetooth & with the transmit frequency turned all the way down.

So following up on the original post- they still haven’t found a solution. They put a new microphone in and I’m still having the same issues.

Looking forward to them fixing this.

I hope the next software update will be the fix we need. Until then, just play it off & blame the noise on their phone ; )

I did notice similar sounds coming from the engine bay when in accessory mode. I wonder if the sound is somehow bleeding onto the mic.

I just played that engine noise clip for my wife & asked her if this was the sound she hears every time I call her from the Taco & she said it sounds exactly like it! So how do you put the truck in accessory mode? I’d like to show this to the technicians at my local Toyota service center.

Without depressing the brake pedal, pressing the engine switch will change the operation mode in succession from: Off - All systems OFF. Emergency flashers can be used. Accessory – Some electrical components can be used. On - All electrical components can be used.

Yes by using your instructions, clicking the push to start twice, you can hear the buzzing louder when it's switched to the "On" position. I'm going to take it to the toyota service center as well and see if they can figure it out.

Well I took my truck to toyota and they said the electrical signals could be emitting rf and that sound can be received by the microphone.. They said there's no fix for it at the moment although they are not 100% sure that is the cause of the issue. Anyways, i found the link below a couple days ago and applied these settings to my truck. It works like a charm for calls on bluetooth with the transmit volume all the way down. However, calls on carplay you can still hear the buzzing. Going forward if any caller complains, ill just pull the plug and it'll switch over to bluetooth. Hopefully, toyota will hear the complaints and fix it in a future firmware update but i wont hold my breath.

I have a 2023 SR5 currently. I had a 2022 SR5, but I really liked the color of the 2023, and I had been having issues with hands-free calling since I bought the first truck. I thought, well maybe the 2023 truck won't have this issue. WRONG. The person I speak on the phone with claims to hear loud buzzing noises, and I often sound like I am underwater or in a tin can. The dealership claimed it was a bad Bluetooth microphone speaker, which was replaced twice in the 2022 before I traded it in. The first time I took my 2023 back, the dealership claimed it was the Bluetooth microphone again. Do you see where I start to get suspicious? This was in March 2023 they replaced the Bluetooth mic. I took it back a couple of weeks ago, and they called into the Toyota Advanced Assessment something or another; the first time the tech called, the call sounded fine. The second time he called them, they reported the same "underwater" and buzzing. They updated the head unit and changed some of the volume settings, which I had already done based on some of the research I had done online. This did not fix anything, and the people I have called since this "fix" are still reporting the underwater or tin can sound and buzzing. They have a serious issue with these head units and are putting off the inevitable, which is replacing them in all these trucks. There are multiple class-action lawsuits about similar issues I have seen online. It is going to be an expensive fix for Toyota, I am sure, but I am incredibly aggravated with it. These trucks are actually my first Toyota vehicles since the early 2000s and I am not happy to pay this much for a vehicle and something like this be wrong with it. My phone works well in every other vehicle I connect it to. My spouse has a 2020 Nissan Rogue, and the calls are crystal clear in it. My mom has a 2018 Honda, and the calls are just as clear. I traded in my 2020 Pathfinder for the Tacoma, and my calls in the PF were perfect. I have an appt to take my truck back to the dealership in 2 weeks for their district service guy to look at along with another Tacoma with the same issue. This issue appears to go back to 2018 and Toyota still has not found a fix for it.

YOU GUYS, i have found a solution! I’ve been having this issue since I bought the truck 1 year ago and I work in outside sales making calls all day from my truck and it’s been an effing nightmare calling clients. If you have an iPhone, WHILE ON A CALL, swipe down from the top right corner of your screen, hit the button that says something like mic option: standard mic. (Very top right button), change to isolate voice. This should solve you problem. You’re welcome…. F*** Toyota for not being able to solve this. I have had my mic replaced multiple times and they kept kicking the can.

Well my friend. I tried this and it seemed like it was going to work at first but then it faded out. Did it still work out for you?
