noticeable increase in fuel consumption, losing 50 tacoMiles per tank of tacoJuice... what is going on?

i am seriously in potential danger of running out of fuel on the road in middle of nowhere again because of all of this :(
 
Well you can always carry a fuel container that holds a few gal., if worried about walking. Just remember running near empty too many times is a slow death to your fuel pump.

that pump is solid at 350k afaik
need a reason to get the tank dropped for clear access
and it just will NOT quit yet :confused:
 
some sorta good news, everybody

i found a Toyota shop that knows HOW TO properly test a fuel pump, to see if this is the trucks issue or not
it was very confusing how they explained the testing procedure, however

but the shop proprietor explained what sorta can happen when the fuel pump is misbehaving and i said YES! i experienced that VERY issue last year in Colorado. something about running lean and rich and struggling to get the ponies going good, especially in the mountains out west that he travels to
but he could not explain WHY all of a sudden the miles-per-tank went into the crapper, maybe its the fuel pump maybe its not the fuel pump
but they can run proper tests to see its current condition
the desk guy started giving me a bunch of BS that the dealer gave me
regarding fuel grade, temperature, wind, hills, tire inflation FML
yada yada yada yada yada
and he still confused the F out of me :confused: my poor little mind cannot handle it at times
lucky the shop proprietor stepped in and told me what i needed to hear

May 14th is the drop-off date
and 140$ diagnostics to check fuel pump specs
by disconnecting fuel line in the engine compartment for the hookup

I am confused as well a bit
Always thot when a fuel pump is bad it just shuts off and you are stranded with not a warning as much

Thats a load of bull. Cars have been built since the 80's to run on e10. The early problems were due to gasket material being incompatible with the ethanol.
 
When using winter fuel a loss in mpg is possible whether ethanol added or not. I notice this in my truck during late fall to about now.
 
Juiced up today

Wheeled 330 miles on 17.25 gallons
19.15 mpg after rounding

Better... but not normal still
That tank also included a full bottle of Lucas oil fuel cleaner treatment which is different than their upper cylinder lubricant
 
You need a few more gallons of snake oil to really make a difference.

should i throw some new fuel injectors at it? new or rebuilt
Yota shop said you cannot test fuel injectors and it would be throwing parts at the situation
very PRICEY parts :confused: if new OEM at MSRP

PRICE....if you had any concerns about cost, you would have unloaded that old gen1 a long time ago. All you're doing now is making a bigger money pit out of it, if throwing new injectors in it that are likely not going to help much. Heck you already claimed you'll do whatever it costs to keep the old truck running....why stop now. After all, each time you buy this snake oil cleaner, it will cost you more than buying a gallon of gas, or two when looking at it that way, so your overall mpg becomes less than ever.
Have you ever thought that your truck has become tired, and less efficient due to all the hours on the engine. I can tell you my 1971 new holland tractor seems to eat more fuel, and make less power than it did 30 years ago, but as long as it still runs, I don't care why.

it could possibly just be the fuel pump is worn nothing more and why it is acting sluggish lately, tacoJohn in Denver has had a couple of new pumps but his superCharger requires a specialty high-flow pump to work properly in his '97 single cab

all is good.

i do have concerns about the costs of new truck
maintenance and repairs on this old truck are not even near 20% the overall cost of a new truck that has such a stankeye when compared to the aggressive looks of what i got

if i dispose of an otherwise nice condition, nice looking, fairly well-kept truck
what then?
i would just look into getting another Gen1 from '97 '96 '95.5 in the SR5 model with MT such as i have... sunroof is very optional and not necessity
those trucks are rather and often difficult to find on the sale market
and IF you do, if it is in anywhere near the overall condition of mine, the cost of that near-like-similar truck is likely not much less than 20,000 USD and likely more

find one out there for sale right NOW that is any significantly less
and i will dispose of this old truck after 27 years right NOW right TODAY
although i do not know how much the disposal cost is, do you know what the disposal cost is by any chance?
it does not need to be towed currently

Carry-on. Obviously you have your mind made up it needs a new fuel pump, and injectors when thats not the answer.
 
TRust me. If the fuel pump is faulty, there will be more engine running issues than lowered mpg. Generally speaking, fuel pumps run or they don't.

Frankly, I think after the number of miles on your truck that the fuel injectors are shot. Yes, they are expensive to replace. But fuel injectors are precision parts. Not easy to manufacture.
