Does 89 octane save, and is 93 octane even better?

Awesome Awesome Awesome. Please let us know what you learn. I'm totally curious. Be sure to use good reputable gas that is truly 93 octane.

Does 89 octane save, and is 93 octane even better?

I'm not questioning your word, or being sarcastic. Not at all. This fascinates me. But ... I don't see how that's possible. If your engine was pinging, then it couldn't possibly have been running at optimal power. That means lower mpg, ceteris parabis. Second, if it was pinging, then...

Wind from open driver's window is brutal.

When my driver's window is open the wind practically punches me in the face. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there any easy trick or fix?

New project- Ramps over wheel wells

I don't see how the welcome mat gets the quad over the wheel wells? Joking. That's brilliant! Very cool!

What is the tendancy for roll over?

I drove cars very hard during my ignorant immature youth. Let's just say that I was doing 'drifting' about 40 years before it became a popular term. Other terms have yet to be created. What I came to personally believe is that a car (any halfway ok car) can't roll over unless you hit...

Downshifting causing transmission wear vs brake wear?

I like to downshift in order to save the brakes when going down a hill. But does that cause more wear to my automatic transmission? Personally, I'd rather replace brakes than get into early transmission work. I have absolutely no idea. Anyone know?

Does 89 octane save, and is 93 octane even better?

My last two tanks of 93 octane were 21.7 mpg and 22.0 mpg. Each tank saw about a third on mountainous highway, a third on mountainous back roads (stop about every 3 to 5 miles), and a third on flat rural roads. I can get 400 miles on one fill up, and I don't have to floor the accelerator...

Electric cars are a huge problem too

That's good to hear. The worst energy sources, in my personal opinion, are the ones that cause damage that can never never never be undone -- like in that video. I can't even describe my feelings when watching the kind of stuff in that video. It makes me sick, and, I'm a conservative!! I...

    Road Rage News Story

Well said! My wife used to schedule freight at a large manufacturing company. She used to say that "There's people who drive trucks, and then there's truck drivers." Sounds like you're a real truck driver.

    Road Rage News Story

I think the law is that you pass on the left, drive on the right. I don't think that there's a law that says that the fastest car on the road gets the left lane, and everyone else needs to pull over???? Someone show me where that is! I don't think that there is a law that says you can...

    firearm concealment/ truck gun

I remember back in highschool, a thousand years ago, we used to go skeet shooting, place the shotguns in the back seat and drive to get something to eat. One day the state police pulled up next to us at the restaurant and we had a great conversation about guns. He liked our shotguns. They...

Does 89 octane save, and is 93 octane even better?

Update .... It continues. I've clicked off several tanks of 93 octane at a solid 21 mpg. This is mostly mountainous country roads with a stop sign or a stop light every 2 or 3 miles. Some of you mention that maybe I'm getting better mileage because I'm driving the 93 octane 'easier' than I...

Does 89 octane save, and is 93 octane even better?

I totally believe it. I had an early 1990's camaro with a V8 that got 29mpg on the highway in Indiana, where highways are nice and flat. There's something to be said for a streamlined car with lots or torque running a transmission that's truly designed for an 8 cyl engine.

Does 89 octane save, and is 93 octane even better?

GREAT QUESTION! Seems to me that higher octane has provided me with more power in my 4cyl 2013. Power's what you would want, true. There is also theoretical justification. See my post #27 in this thread. http://www.tacomaforum.com/showpost.php?p=19652&postcount=27 The disclaimer would...

Does 89 octane save, and is 93 octane even better?

Well, it's done. I'm now buying 93 octane for my 4cyl tacoma until I prove myself wrong. But that may not ever happen cause I can't stand running 87 octane any more. After watching my mileage and my driving, I have concluded that 93 octane has a HUGE difference in power and mpg over 87...

Does 89 octane save, and is 93 octane even better?

My guess is that it's simple: Tacomas are tuned for the conditions used to produce that MPG rating that's printed on the window sticker when the vehicle is sold. I'm thinking that most everyone's conditions could be different in some way or another. For me, I'm both at normal altitude and...

Does 89 octane save, and is 93 octane even better?

If I was discussing whether removing an air filter can increase mileage, or at what pressure a compressed air tank will explode, then I'd have to agree with you. On the other hand, how well gasoline explodes is profoundly a subject of chemistry. You'll just have to trust me on this.

Does 89 octane save, and is 93 octane even better?

That is a great answer. It actually does make good sense. Yes, it would be logical to tune an engine for 87. I guess my only wonder is under what conditions. They might have tuned based on driving on flat land in Ohio, rather than up mountains in Pennsylvania. Just an update: I'm half...

Does 89 octane save, and is 93 octane even better?

Oh, one more thing, chemically speaking, just from a perspective of chemistry. Let's try it this way ... Point #1: If 89 octane doesn't trigger the sensor to retard timing while I'm driving up a mountain in Pennsylvania -- then the fuel / air will be compressed more before ignition, because...
