Does 89 octane save, and is 93 octane even better?

Thanks. My point isn't about octane minimum or maximum. It's about optimum. Are you saying that 87 is the optimum octane, or are you saying that running at optimum octane will not give more than 1/2 mpg under my conditions?

Droid app and hardware. Any recommendations?

Thanks! I'm thinking about getting one for my "octane study". But the cost is kind of more than my curiosity will justify.

    2wd off road

I'm often on a construction site. I got 4wd because of the blizzards. I'd get stuck without it. But ... the main issue for me is ground clearance. When I have to drive on roads with ruts and rocks, then the ground clearance is what keeps me going. I also like how the Tacoma doesn't have a...

Does 89 octane save, and is 93 octane even better?

That's actually helpful. I was getting disappointed by some of the personal opinion one-liners. A little about me: I'm a chemist. I like technical stuff. There could be other variables that weren't included in the dyno run. I drive in mountainous Pennsylvania, up and down steep hills...

    Bug out truck

I'm not sure at all. But I like the way every single word of that sounds! The "topper with racks" sounds totally like something that I would like! What is a "Bug out vehicle"?

Droid app and hardware. Any recommendations?

Is there a droid app plus hardware combination that will allow me to plug something into a diagnostic port on my 2013 4cyl Tacoma and see mpg and stuff? However, I'm seeing reviews that claim that some of these products are shutting down trucks, etc, etc. In other words, computer programmers...

What Vehicles lead you to your Tacoma?

My last two cars before the Tacoma were both Honda Accords. Loved the first one. One of the top five favorite cars I've ever owned. Loved it so much that I bought a second one without even researching it. Hated the second one. My second Honda Accord might be the single worst car I've...

Does 89 octane save, and is 93 octane even better?

Well, today I filled up with 93 octane! :shifty: Wow! I'm serious. Could 'feel' a difference a couple blocks down the road. At the first quarter tank mark on my fuel gauge I had driven 160 miles on the 93 octane. In the past I have usually gotten about 100 miles at that point. Dare I...

Does 89 octane save, and is 93 octane even better?

I have personally experienced what you are saying on many occasions. Sometimes I can fill up and do great with 87. Other times it just feels like 87. Guess it depends on how much 89 or 93 they have to 'spill down' - so to speak. It can work the other way, too. I typically trust Shell gas...

i think my idle is to high?

Recently got my 2013 four cylinder Tacoma. First thing that surprised me is that it has much more torque at lower rpms than cars that I previously owned. I'm so used to cars having to wind up to 3,500 rpm off of the line. I at first thought that I wasn't accelerating much at 1,500 rpm...

Does 89 octane save, and is 93 octane even better?

This is fun. I am wondering what the mileage improvement would have to be to break even on cost? Let's say that the 87 octane gas gave me 17 mpg. 87 octane gas cost $3.40 / gallon. 89 octane gas cost $3.50 / gallon. cost = $/gal * gallons gallons = miles / mpg thus: cost = $/gal *...

Does 89 octane save, and is 93 octane even better?

It really did seem to do better with the 89. Even as soon as the first quarter of a tank I noticed that it seemed to be getting fewer miles. But I'm not sure at all. I wish this truck had an mpg gauge. Crying out loud. No heated mirrors and no mpg gauge. I always noticed better mpg...

Does 89 octane save, and is 93 octane even better?

LOL! I was actually a math assistant, up to calculus level, back in college a million years ago. But it's MY FAULT that you don't understand. My explanation was very very very poor and needlessly complex. It sort of boiled down to this ... If I buy cheaper gas, then I need to buy more...

Does 89 octane save, and is 93 octane even better?

I had been running 89 octane gasoline in my new 2013, 4 cyl, tacoma. Got about 18 mpg with mixed driving. Decided to save some money and use 87 octane, instead of 89. I then noticed that my mileage probably decreased about 1 mpg. It seemed to drop from 18mpg to 17mpg. I say probably...

    RUST issues?

What I know about the rust issue is from reading about it. But ... I read about it for hours and hours. It was just fascinating to me. It fascinated me that a an excellent major auto manufacturer with decades of experience could fail so massively in such a critical area. Also, I was planning...

    first tacoma a few ?????????

I just have a question, not knowing the answer. How come not change the oil entirely when it's that old? What's the logic? This is a sincere question, not sarcasm. I really don't know why. Curious.

    Bad night for the Taco

Also, keep in mind that the carfax will show the damage, thus depreciating your truck further even if it's fixed perfectly. Sucks that you are out risking your life while some loser is totaling your truck back at the parking lot. I hope that you are made whole. Only good news is that he did...

Electric cars are a huge problem too

Nuke seems like a reasonable alternative? On the other hand, I wouldn't like standing in my back yard and watching an ugly giant sci-fi tower belching out radioactive steam. But that's just me.

Ideas for a simple inexpensive first project

I just bought my first pickup about three weeks ago, a Tacoma. Anyway looking to do a little work on it for fun. Some sort of modification or whatever. Any ideas on a simple first project for a newbie? I'm good mechanically, but no significant tools (yet), and haven't worked on cars...

Electric cars are a huge problem too

Any time someone brags about plugging in their electric car, i show them this video. They are using new methods and literally ripping the tops off of mountains in Virginia to get at the coal. http://youtu.be/p5RcbPZXUZo I conserved by not having 4 kids. I'll drive oil.
