adapting gen 2 truck cap

I have recently purchased a 2017 Tacoma Access Cab and wanted to adapt my gen 2 cap for use (it is an aluminum work cap). While the rail dimensions work fine, the tail gate changes of the 17 taco do not match the cap door (there is a curve in the 17 tailgate). So before I settle on either buying a new cap (at about $1400) or just getting rid of it entirely, are there any useful suggestions for modifying my current cap door?
