anybody have any first hand experience using aftermarket rear shoes, im ay 160k miles and think im due but dont want to pay for the expensive OEMs since this trucks 12 years old with 160k on the clock' Most if not all aftermarket pads are made in China with extremely positive and extremely negative reviews, on the Toyota oem.s have about a zero complaint with fitment, braking, longevity, maybe i might have to pay the stealer for peace of mind but really dont want to invest in high dollar parts if there may be lesser cost equivalent out there that can get the job done. any opinions or first hand knowledge is welcome. and am thinking about doing the install myself maybe save on the labor cost.

Imo, stay with the Toyota ones. Those rear shoes seem to never wear out unless carrying a heavy load, or towing, I think the trucks frame will rot out before the rear brakes need replacing.
Replacing rear shoes is easy with simple hand tools...just complete one side at a time while leaving the other side shoes exposed, if it's a first time doing drum brakes. That way you'll know where everything belongs.

Wait for the dealership holiday parts sale on OEM and gat 40 to 50 per cent off msrp

doing some research on aftermarket reviews it doesn't seem to me these Chinese made shoes aren't really too good, and there aren't any US made after market shoes at all. best price for an OEM Rear kit i can find is about $74(locally) and there should'nt be any issues with fitment, noise, longevity etc(we know the drill) and maybe i could offset the cost by DIYing it, ive read some people rave about those POWERSTOP brakes kits that include drums, shoes, springs but they are all Chinese parts not really the high quality of OEM parts that make the differance. the OEM shoes are stamped NBK D9033-FF N14 this is the maker/friction code they are USA made by the Jap company called NIBK brakes, i wish i could find an aftermarket OE version by NBK but doesn't seem to be any or any higher quality shoes made by ADVICS or Akebono for the Tacoma, all there is are China made aftermarket shoes.

If you're looking for good rotors, and pads, EBC worked really well in my gen1 tundra.
Nothing wrong with powerstop either. A buddy of mine that runs a large independent garage swears by them if looking for better than oem.

yes POWERSTOP seems to be a go to brand for Tacoma people , Ive seen a somewhat local seller on Craigslist selling a POWERSTOP kit for 2nd gen taco KOE15389DK that has new shoes, drums, springs, star adjuster, brake lubrication packet for $140, may also take an offer for it. New on AMAZON its $183.79 plus ship/tax

Powerstop is a goto brand for all trucks no matter what manufacture. I've never tried them, only could claim EBC took care of those wonky factory disc brakes on my gen1 tundra.

That looks like an aok deal

a reviewer on AMAZON for this rear shoe kit (tacoma) says the kit is of sub-par quality as far as the supplied new parts as compared to an Toyota OEM spring/star adjuster and maybe the drums and shoes too, although the reviewer also has the front POWERSTOP front disc kit which is good:confused:. i guess like most Chinese parts are probably made at the same plant and then sold to American companies which slap on their own logo stickers and sell to us,

What thickness are your rear shoes measuring in the present?

i havent looked, but i know they have a minimum thickness of 1mm , new they are 5mm, im getting a slight groan from them stopping at 160k miles im sure they must be on the outs. im hoping the drums arent out of spec they are very pricey, i think im going to have a place check the rears and give me an idea what needs to be replaced, so i know exactly what needs to go
