Cheap but effective..

Hey guys.. I am interested in easy mods y'all have done to your trucks to make them better.. It doesn't necessarily have to be cheap as long as it made a difference.. I've done a few little things to mine to start the thread off.. Pictures are nice!! So to start off with I did the fog light anytime mod which is super simple and super cheap if you have a few INCHES of wire laying around. Here's a pic now I can turn my fog lights on with my drls lows and hi beams. ImageUploadedByTaco Forum1447820301.906687.jpg
Next.. I have a trd off road 4x4 so in order for my rear differential to lock I had to be in 4 lo, I was not happy about that because if you were in wet grass with bald tires you would have to use 4wd to get out!!? So after a little research I decided to do the diff lock mod...ImageUploadedByTaco Forum1447820496.667051.jpgImageUploadedByTaco Forum1447820516.735222.jpg.. You have to buy a relay for this one, less than 10 bucks. Now I can engage the rear locker in 2wd, 4hi, and 4lo which is pretty convenient.. I recently did the rear diff breather mod, this mod allows you to drive into pretty deep water where without the mod you can only go about 18" deep in water before it could possibly get into your rear differential.. For this mod you have to order a couple of parts from Toyota. Cost me less than 25 dollars, I extended my breather to the storage box in the side of the bed...please post if you have any questions or need part numbers or anything....I have a 2013 Tacoma dcsb trd off-road...ImageUploadedByTaco Forum1447821182.192794.jpg.. Look forward to seeing any cheap or unique mods you guys have done!

Hmm I am not sure if the 16s are the same as the older ones.. I would google it and see if anyone has done it on the 16s yet..

I have a Tacoma just like yours, but a year newer. I've been looking for a way to use the rear diff lock more and it looks like you've nailed the idea. Was it difficult to do?

It wasn't too bad.. The hardest part of mine was finding a relay.. All the radioshacks have gone out of business so I ended up finding one on Amazon for like 10 bucks or so.. All you have to do is cut 5 or 6 wires put a female connector on them and slide them on the poles of the relay.. Just have to make you put the right wires on the right poles...works like a charm in all drives and seems to lock in a lot faster now

A lot of people don't wanna cut wires so if you're still under warranty or anything you may not.. However they couldn't tell unless they take the glove box off

Can you explain the differential breather mod?
Yes, if you look from under your rear bumper and look on the top left of your differential (some call it the pumpkin) you will see like a little nub sticking up and that is your factory rear diff breather.. Which of your truck is stock is about 18" high... So if you are off road and you come across a stream or creek and it's deeper than about 18" the cool water against your hot differential will cause this breather to release the warm air and if you're in deeper than the factory breather, it is possible water can get in your rear diff.. Oil and water don't mix.. So you have to order 2 parts from Toyota to make it work and you'll also need about 6' of 1/4" fuel line..the part numbers are 9090451026 and 9093003136
One is called a union and the other one is a breather..

Thanks alot, I actually got under there yesterday and checked it out. I might sound dumb here but I never knew it had breather on it, and I've been in water well over 18 inches deep. This mod something I plan on doing soon

What relay did you use, If you remember? Thanks man cause like you said, radio shack is going out...
I found one on Amazon.. It's a double pole double throw (dpdt) it was actually from RadioShack but thru Amazon.. I've been asked to explain it.. I'm waiting for a day off when I have time and I will get the part number for the relay and go into detail as to what wire goes to what pole on the relay..

Alright so I've had a few people ask me about the rear diff mod so today I took some pics and and goin to explain how I did mine.. First you must have a trd off road with the electronic rear locker.. Mine is a 2013.Here is the part number for the relay i used pclh-202d1s.. It is a 10a 12VDC DPDT(double pole double throw) relay.. ImageUploadedByTaco Forum1449277489.826096.jpgSo to start off with you will need to remove the glove boxImageUploadedByTaco Forum1449276752.225908.jpg
On the bottom of the shock absorber thing squeeze the plastic together and pull the shock off.. Then on either side of the glove box pull it together so the knubs will allow the glove box to fall all the way downImageUploadedByTaco Forum1449276951.873686.jpgImageUploadedByTaco Forum1449276963.808384.jpg
Now you have to take the cover off that's on top of where the glove box wasImageUploadedByTaco Forum1449277240.773486.jpg
Take that bolt off behind the glove box latch with a 10 mm socket or nut driverImageUploadedByTaco Forum1449277309.710471.jpgImageUploadedByTaco Forum1449277327.562190.jpg
Now if you look under the dash like toward the airbag you will see two white plugs the one you will be working with is the one closest to the front of the truckImageUploadedByTaco Forum1449277452.857271.jpg
You can unplug it to make it easier to get to.. There are 8 poles on the relay but you'll only be cutting 6 wires.. Purple wire splice into 2 wires and go to poles 1&4
Green with black stripe goes to pole 2
Reddish pink wire goes to pole 3
Green wire goes to pole 6
Red with black stripe goes to pole 8
Blue wire goes to pole 5
Pole 7 run to ground..
Here are a few more pictures..ImageUploadedByTaco Forum1449277812.904025.jpgImageUploadedByTaco Forum1449277851.889613.jpg I put male connectors on the wires I cut so I could connect it back to factory if I needed to.. You'll need female connector to slide into the poles of the relay..ImageUploadedByTaco Forum1449277961.349719.jpg here's how I ground mine from pole #7
I really hope this helps and y'all can find the same relay to make it simple.. Any other questions just ask I'll help as much as I can

Even under warranty the dealership can't deny you if something goes wrong. They have to prove the mod caused the problem. And any mod for that matter. http://m.dummies.com/how-to/content/keeping-your-mods-warranty-intact.html

Had know idea this even existed WOW sure is nice to know this info..

Red Toyota Emblems, blacked out Tacoma emblems, flex antenna, bedliner painted the front grill and fenders, blacked out headlight housings, weather tech vent visors, Running 33" Nittos (spacers to fit), Spacer lift/ level kit, Avid Light bar, etc...... All cheap(ish)
