Damaged Spiral Cable

A couple weeks ago I noticed that my steering wheel was rubbing on the bottom left corner. While backing out of the drive way I can heat that annoying rubbing. My SR5 is only 3 months old and has 4k miles. I went in this morning for my first toyota care 5k service and mentioned it to my service advisor. After being there 3 hours he came to tell me that they took my whole steering wheel apart and found that my spiral cable is damaged, and that it's causing the rubbing. He then said they don't stock that part to they have to order it and it should take about a week to get in. He said it doesn't have any safety issue when driven. Has anybody experienced this??
