Have a 96 rwd 2.4l. Recently I statyed it and it idles fine but if your not on the accelerator it will (as best as I can describe) load up and back fire. Just started doing this. Idles fine and seems to run ok when on the gas. I put a brand new maf sensor on and no change. Everything is pretty new as far as ignitio . I need some advice on what I should check and dig into next.

Put a vacuum gauge on the engine and check vacuum at idle and above. Don't connect it to a ported vacuum source. A PCV line will work fine.
The EGR could be opening at the wrong time or too far causing the problem. If the vacuum is good and then suddenly drops you either have a bad vacuum leak or the EGR is having troubles. Most likely a sensor if so.
