I bought a one year old 2000 Tacoma (VIN: 4TAVL52N3YZ674620) on 9/11/2001 which was a very disconcerting experience. The truck had one owner prior to my purchase and was in like-new condition, and I've been to only owner and primary driver for the last 24 years. The engine runs great, doesn't consume oil, and has never been run hard or overheated. I'm retired and in my 60s, and I've tried to take care of it.
I'm buying a new truck and it's time to sell the Tacoma. It's in good condition for a truck this age, and it's only got 137,000 miles on it. Here are the things that are wrong with it:
1. Check engine light is on (code P0450 see attached pic). I mentioned this to a mechanic I use, and he said the carbon canisters could be at fault, but I haven't brought the truck to him yet. If it's the switch, that might be a problem because I don't think Toyota makes them.
2. Small dent (3" x 3") in right rear corner where my wife backed into another car (see pic).
3. Left front quarter panel has been replaced twice after two different people borrowed the truck and bumped into things, and if you look closely at the attached pic you can see there another small ding in it). So the paint doesn't quite match.
4. Tailgate has been replaced with genuine Toyota tailgate after a friend backed into it when the tailgate was down. I was pressure washing his house for free, and he backed into my tailgate. I guess no good deed goes unpunished.
5. Right passenger side has had bodywork done (by Toyota dealership) after an idiot I worked with backed into the side of the truck and crunched the spot behind the passenger door. Look at the attached pic, and you can see that the body shop did a good job of fixing it.
6. Some of the chrome has come off the lettering
7. A couple miscellaneous dings in the body and a small dent in the read fender.
2.4 L engine
Plastic bed liner that's been on it since I bought it
5 speed manual transmission
Electric door locks and windows
Power steering
AC that works great as does the heater
Cruise control that also works great
Alloy wheels
Cloth seats
I had the clutch replaced last year
Replaced the rotors, front disc brake pads, and read drum brake shoes in 2019
Tires are OK, but not new
I think the battery is a couple of years old
It's been in continuous use since I bought it, and I drive it almost every day. I took it on a 350 mile road trip last May, and it did great. Although my pics show snow, I live in Georgia and today is one of those very rare snow days. The truck has never been in an area where the roads are salted. About the only after market items are a Pioneer touchscreen CD/DVD receiver, 4 new speakers (two JBL and two Polk installed in doors and rear factory speaker locations) and a backup camera. I'll be happy to take more pics if that would be helpful to anyone. The snow should be gone tomorrow.
Anyway, my question is: What should I ask for this truck? I've done an appraisal on Edmunds and their quick offer is $3,500. There's not a lot of used Tacomas of this age for sale so it's difficult to determine what it's worth, but I was thinking closer to $5,000 or maybe as high as $7,000. Any serious advice would be greatly appreciated.
