I did a search and the last phone mount thread I found was about a year old, so I started a new one.
I always kept my phone in the cup holder, because I didn't really need to look at it while driving.
My folks spend the winter about 127 miles south of me, and I make that drive about once a week. Even thou I obviously know the way, I've been using Google Maps during the drive since they started giving alerts on speed traps and road conditions ahead. I stopped at a rest area for a smoke and took my phone and noticed it had how long I had left on my trip and showed the road a head in red...Orlando traffic.
So I decided to mount my phone where I could see it. People on the "other" Tacoma site are crazy about their phone mounts. I wanted to make my own. I already had all the stuff I needed except an extension arm and the actual phone mount.
I had some aluminum that's 3/4 x 1/8 that I used. Marked the dash about where I wanted my phone, and popped off the surround thing to see how long of a piece I needed to cut.
Cut the aluminum to size, clamped it with a C clamp to drill the holes to rivet it in place. I had to grind off one corner of the aluminum because it stuck out about a 1/16"...probably would have been fine.
I put the surround thing back on, and put the ball, arm, and phone mount together, and put my phone in it to be sure where I wanted to mount it. Used a silver marker to mark the hole.
Took it back off and drilled and tapped the hole 1/4-20, Didn't have to tap it, but the ball I had was a female mount, and I may get a male mount ball in the future. I doubt I'll leave this on except when I'm traveling.
Came out pretty good, and all it cost me was a 2" extension arm and the phone mount.
Gotta love Bluetooth, I have the same songs on my phone as I have on the flash drive plugged into my truck tunes.
