whats behind the air filter

my ? is i pulled the nair box off to look at my filter and notice this cotton wovin thing that in the air plimtum and was wondering what it for and can i romove this for better air flow just dont want to set any codes or mess up anything i own a 2013 tacoma 4x4 trd thanks

It's a carbon trap for fuel fumes. Removing it does nothing for the V6.

People say it gives the 4 banger some power but I haven't seen dyno charts for just that mod. It is just an emissions thing but that is the reason why no aftermarket intake, except for the crappy looking basic Airaid intake, is smog legal.

So will this increase air flow because to me looks like there's a little restriction there between the carbon trap and this honkin air filter
