Whine when starting in the cold

New to the forum, wasn't able to find this topic in the search so I made a new one.

2006 Tacoma V6 4L Automatic
When I start it in the mornings (or after not driving it for a while) when the weather is cold (40's and below), I have a whine that sounds like it's coming from underneath the truck. The noise last for about 30 seconds to a minute, depending on how cold it is. Also, when I put it in drive, there seems to be a slight hesitation (also worse with the colder the weather) and it will jar a little once it finally gets seated in drive. I do not think the noise is coming from a belt.

My questions are what could the noise be coming from? What could cause the hesitation from shifting in to drive? And are either of these of concern? Im afraid that this could be a transmission problem and I would like some advice as to what to do if it is.

Thanks
