Well the answer is .... timing belt. Old girl shredded it so fine it looked like a whole school of mice had made a nest at the level the heads meet the block. All I could do was peek inside the top of the timing belt cover on the side of the road as the engine was just too damn hot to take the...

Still had good voltage after it died, so don't think it was the alternator, but I'll give the battery a good charge as well and make sure that it's not a low voltage issue. Thanks for the idea.

I've had it for the last 135K miles, timing belt changed 104K ago, and on the list of things to do soon. I'm going to re-verify my initial peek that the belt is not broken in the AM. Thanks for the suggestion!
