Rear bumper crumbling rust problem.

Tacoma Tommy

I'm a newby here just picked up a 2006 Tacoma. The rear bumper has severe crumbling rust problems. I want to replace it with a lighter, stronger more economical bumper. Who do you recommend?

I think in terms of economics you only have three options.

Remove it

Try to find one in a salvage yard

fabricate a replacement

The only replacement bumpers I’m familiar with are the off road bumpers and they’re not cheap. Although there have been some imported eBay knock off look alike bumpers in lighter gauge steel. But not what I’d call economical. But cheaper than the real deal steel versions that run a couple grand.

This certainly isn’t everyone’s taste but a guy I used to ride motorcycles with made a bumper for his ‘72 F-150 from an old railroad tie and some brackets he fabricated. Back when ‘patina’ was just rust. But it worked. And I’ve helped a neighbor make ‘surfboard’ bumpers for his ‘68 VW Bug out of 2x8s.
