Rear lift steel tubing?

I'm sure ill get some responses calling me an idiot, but is it possible to use steel tubing as rear lift blocks, say two inches. I have a buddy who says its possible, and would actually hold up, but im not sure he knows what he's talking about. If not horizontal, what about cutting and laying end on end (in pairs).
 
Yes it will if the gauge is thick enough. But weld plates at the top and bottom. Max Trac makes them this way. You are talking about steel box tubing right?

Like this. But in the size you need. These are 3". They are also angled for the driveline.

I wouldnt do it lift blocks are cheap as hell and their solid steel if you get them from rough country
