Radar Detectors

i looked at the price of the model mentioned in post #1

its about 800$ but they WILL pay yer tickets under circumstances

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/escort-redline-360c-radar-detector-system-black/6424956.p?skuId=6424956

do they pay your bail for going 100+ in a 65 zone
but now that some systems are going to NO Cash Bail i guess that is rather moot point LOL
my speedometer is OFF by roughly 7mph so i have that 'excuse' to work with LOL
i did ask a state trooper once if i was going 80 on rural US-20 because i had no clue, and he said to me Just About!

For real?? I’ve never heard of a radar detector being able to detect red light cameras? If this is true than I’m buying one for sure, what brand do you have. Thanks!!

Sure does. There are no red light cameras in my town, but I was driving in Daytona and about a block from the intersection it told me "Red Light Camera Ahead." Found out they have a lot of them in the area.

This is the one I ended up buying.

I ended up not buying that one.

See my post above.

FWIW. My fuel mileage tanks at speeds over 70 mph. Typically, I get 20-21 mpg feeding the V-6 when running 70 mph. Over that the mpg drop quickly.

So, I set the cruise control at 70 mph, set up camp in the RH lane, listen to tunes. Then I smile as I roll by those stopped with a bubblegum light behind them.

$800 for a detector is $$ better in my wallet or fuel tank. Tickets just ain't worth the cost or the impact on insurance premiums. All that expense just to arrive a few minutes early...... Best way to solve arrival time issues is to leave a little bit earlier.

Exactly!! I set my cruise control every morning for 65 mph and I just cruise in the fast lane (just kidding) :). I’m in the 2nd lane from the right listening to my morning show drinking my coffee & eating breakfast while the azz clowns blast past me at 85-90 mph but what’s hilarious is when we get to the same off ramp every single morning since I leave at the same time I see them sitting at the same red light as me. So go figure!? I don’t see the point in driving 90 mph to get to work and burning all that extra gas at $5.00 a gallon and I’m sure as hell not in that big of a hurry to get to work so yeah I couldn’t agree with ya more my Brutha, would be nice if everyone just cruised the speed limit or 5 mph over and confused the hell out of the cops so they couldn’t write any speeding tickets. :)

i recently tested my rig at extreme speeds for a measured length on a full tank in eastern Iowa to the Illinois border (Des Moines to Quad Cities) before filling up those hard driven miles to avoid the excise Illinois fuel tax once I crossed the river
honestly i did not see any noticeable drop in 'normal' mileage (20mpg) averaging 80 to 100 mph across half of Iowa ~171 miles
i do see a VERY significant gain in MPGs keeping it below 55 mph for a whole tank i get nearly 100 more miles on the same full tank than i would at 65 to 70 and beyond to the limit

is it just my 5vZ engine or the lesser weight of my rig compared to the other taco gen V6 engines that I can get that much more mileage going less than 55mph 'most of the time'

460 miles on 17.5 gallons = 26.25 mpg
360 miles on 17.5 gallons = 20.5 mpg

that is VERY significant imho and fuel savings of 20$ for equivalent mileage

Jay.....be careful on that I-80 corridor East of Des Moines. Many fatal accidents on that stretch.

I live just North of Des Moines in Ames. I've run that path countless times. Its frequently in the news for fatalities and pile ups.

For comparative purposes. My 2nd Gen with the 4.0 L, 4WD tips the scales at 4400 lbs. It sits on stock suspension and stock engine. Only performance upgrades have been the speakers. Running 70-75 mph, the mpg drops into the upper teens. Over 80 mph, bottom teens for mpg. At the price of fuel, that drop adds to the trip $$ quickly.

An aerodynamic fact. A doubling of speed will quadruple aerodynamic drag. We all know how wind cheating these trucks are....... Think about this. You are traveling at 70 mph bucking a head wind of 30 mph (not uncommon in IA). The truck is consuming fuel like it is running 100 mph with 4 times the wind drag as 50 mph.

yes, i usually do not drive that fast in Iowa because of the many troopers i always see. this time i was trying to follow behind a fast moving car from Indiana, they must not have had a radar detector because i saw them pulled over east of Iowa City

the road surface on i80 through most of Iowa is VERY sketchy and in need of many further repairs, i hate running through the construction near the Cedar Rapids exit around 380 for years now... narrow lanes and fast moving semi-trailers speeding through pushing you into the construction walls with no shoulders
when i need to head east i much prefer to head to St Joes in Missouri and take US-36 across to Illinois... less semi traffic, 4 lanes and 100 less miles to the IL border than it is across Iowa river to river

193 miles

the wind drag is bad on my little truck, the worst i recall was down i29 in the Dakotas with probably a constant headwind of 30 to 40, and a speed of 70 (limit is 80 there in SD) i barely got over 300 miles on 17 gallon tank

Jay....I hear you on the I-80 condition and the idiots. Many of IA roads are in poor to bad condition. Winter with the freeze/thaw cycles are accelerating the breakdown. I-35 is just as bad, both traffic and condition.

Generally, I'll will take either Highway 20 or 30 East to connect with I-380, then drop to Iowa City to pick up I-80. I'm able to avoid most of the stupidness.

The risk is if one of these skilled pilots loses control, he could take out multiple vehicles including me.

This was close to where I'm at from a couple years ago

yep.....winter driving during or after a storm is the worst. If the road looks wet.....then its probably ice.
