Rear brake job

ake both tires and drums off. Do one side at a time. You can look at the side you haven’t touched if you have questions. I tube is a amazing tool when it comes to drum rear brakes also

Learned the same way LilG..

Youtube does have some great videos on this topic.

If you have a bad memory, take some pics before you disassemble the brakes. As said, do one side at a time. Pay particular attention how and where the springs are anchored and which way the short end of the brake adjuster faces. Brake lube (lubriplate among others) makes for a professional job.

How expensive at dealer? How hard to diy? Brake shoes on a 2011 Tacoma 4x4.

an '11 needs rear brake shoes already??

the shoes on my rig have 25yrs and 262k on them and are meaty meaty meaty still, i probably won't need to replace those until the 1/2 million miles or more LOL
bell cranks for the handbrake and that are another story in my situation (lots of rust found today) i think i have to disassemble everything to clean and lubricate the adjusting mechanisms and all that jazz

but your query was how much for the 'expertly trained' monkey shop to do this, the ones that don't seem to have a clue howto remove a seized drum!
so depending on parts needed, if you need new drums, wheel cylinder, bell crank... i could see this ringing up to anywhere from 700$ to 900$ if not more depending on rate, hopefully not the CA raping rate!

I think my gen1 tundra rear shoes were still good at 200k miles. The fronts not so much, they needed new calipers and pads before 50k miles.

perhaps if you often pull a trailer and/or haul heavy loads it puts more use and wear on the rear drum shoes?

Idk, but when i towed an enclosed trailer, and 3 snowmobiles a few times a winter 500 miles one way to quebec with the tundra, it sure destroyed my front rotors, and pads. Rear shoes didn't seem affected to any excessive wear.

Well then perhaps from getting over aggressive with that hand brake, using it as the sole stopping yada yada when the gravity stop is just not working well enough
Which I have tried on occasion at a 4-way stop rolling up to it slowly 10mph
Got a real nice chirpy squeal out of those back tires locking up and made a few pedestrians jump and look
It was like the anti-burnout LOL
