Ride from hell

What hell i put myself through the constant shifting up down was absolutely nerve racking.

Next time, get a truck with a three-speed transmission. You'll shift less often.

Oh, wait, there aren't any!

We decided to downsize from a Ram (8 speed AT) so I found a really nice used 2013 Tacoma 2 WD and liked it. So much so that I decided to check out a new 2017 TRD Off Road 4x4. I got to drive it with the salesman for five miles. One on the interstate. The first two weeks I drove it around town and a few miles on flat I 40. Then I drove it to Tulsa from Oklahoma City on the turnpike. I have never been so pissed off at a new vehicle simply because of the constant shifting and high rpms. Gave up on cruise control. To this day this truck can’t maintain a steady speed because of shifting up and down on that turnpike.

So I have 11,000 trouble free miles and love everything else about this truck. I will keep it and let the 3.5 scream going up long grades.

The ShiftSense Pro has helped tremendously.

To those of you who said trade LOL . Tried to trade up to a Tundra
Paid 43+ for taco limited Tundra. Limited 2017

4months old 6k. miles 53k plus

Trade offer 30700.00
Not too good trade value.
Didn't fall off turnip truck yesterday!

However I have come up with a cure.

I bought a set of power enhancers from URD IT elimimates cats
Check engine comes on no cruise but really increased my power band. Don't know what effect on mpg will see

I have a 2017 SR5 and drove it 3.5 hours to Chicago and the same back .....got 20 + mpg and had none of the shifting issues you all describe.....sure beats the 17 mpg from my 4.6 tundra. And it gets 17.5-18.5 weekly driving. I love mine.....I think a lot of people expect to much of the 3.5 and try to drive like it's a V8 which it is not. Drive it sensibly and it will do fine.

Until you put it on cruise control haha

30k that’s just a slap in the face. That’s really their starting point if they really want to make a deal they’ll come up 7-8k
They offered me $13k for my Tundra when I was making a deal on my 2017 Tacoma. They ended up giving me $21k for it by the time the deal was done. If they want it they’ll pay for it if not keep it and walk away from the entire deal. They want to sale you a vehicle and if the trade is part of it make it work for you not them. Know how much you want for the vehicle and stick to it. Also it helps if you have an ad on Craigslist that you can show them saying it’s for sale for $40k and people are interested. They’ll pay you $37 for it and ask $40k for it.

Shift Sense Pro solves so many problems that It’s a shame all 3rd Gen owners don’t try it. The Highlander shifts just as bad as the Taco it just has more sound deadening and is more airodynamic. I know spelling is wrong but the point is the same.

I use the cruise control going 30 miles east on I 40 and back. It will gear down a couple of times to fifth. Flat and little to no wind cruising just under 75 mph. I love it. Very nice trip.

When I travel the turnpike to Tulsa with the long grades using the cruise control set at 77 mph all hell breaks loose. It slams down to fourth and holds there until starting down the other side of the hill. I get home and hook up with my friend J.D. to calm down. So to help some I won’t use the cruise control but it is very difficult to maintain a steady speed because it will gear down to fifth, accelerate easily back to 77 mph, shift to sixth and drop 2 to 3 mph, gear down to fifth and start over.

I have the SSP and it helps.

I’ve had mine shift as low as 3rd and hold it for miles going 70mph running 4500 RPMs up hwy 26.D2D12E30-9A32-4C79-8073-4622FFF1A4CB.png I just kept thinking it’s got to down shift some time. It can’t keep holding 3rd gear until it peaks the mountain. It proved me wrong and held that MF until it peaked. 9A344136-62C8-4B8E-84EE-D316BCF01B3D.png I didnt start documenting for the first few miles I was just watching it thinking this is crazy. 01A0B3F1-08CC-453C-9D96-7269296FD79A.png after 12 miles or so I finally took CC off. SMH haven’t used it since.

Living in Western North Carolina, I travel I26 and I40 all the time. All approaches to Asheville have runaway truck lanes. I never have the problem you are describing, and go 70s. Just sayin'. Of course, I have SSP.
