Oil change question

I’m fairly new to the 3rd generation Tacoma. I bought a 2017 trd sport with 20K miles on it. Changed the oil right when I bought it and my maintenance light came on at 25K. I’ve been hearing that 3rd gen Tacoma’s are 10K mile oil changes not 5K, is this true?

They advertise 10k mile oil changes however the service light comes on ever 5k miles. According to the maintenance schedule at 5k miles youre supposed to go to dealer for tire rotation and inspection, 10k miles is oil change, tire rotation, and inspection. Personally I change my oil every 6 months, 5k to 6k mile range, rotate tires once a year.

Makes sense now thanks.

as others have said Toyota specifies 10,000 mile oil change interval. I change mine at 5,000 because I tow a travel trailer during the spring and summer months.

I grew up in the '60's when the oil change interval was every 3,000 miles, and stayed with that until the advent of synthetic oil. I really believe that a 10,000 mile interval is fine, but since I change my own, it is just cheap insurance to change the oil earlier.

That said, we drive our Toyotas well over 100,000 miles before replacing them and have never had to do more than change oil, filters, belts, and spark plugs.

They told my dad every 10000 and I change mine at 4500 most. Why is it that the oil change light starts at 4000 but the dealer says 10000? Hmmm. I would go by the manual/oil light indicator. Or do your own and set the odometer.

"Service" should be done every 5K.
Tire rotation at the first 5k for instance, then oil change at the other 5k (10k oil changes).

The light should come on around 4500 miles so you know service is almost due and u have 500 miles to figure out an appointment or to buy ur own stuff to do the maint.

Yes with the key off press and hold the odometer button then turn the ignition key to the on position. Don’t stop holing the odometer button and you will see dots on the dash blink and count down. When that’s done it is reset.

Yes... Change your oil at every other service light. My 2017 Tacoma gets fresh oil and a TRD oil filter about every 8-9000 miles. If you are using a quality Synthetic 0w20 oil that meets Toyota specs you are good to go!! I'm using Shell Rotella Gas Truck 0w-20 with great results.
