How do you tell if the clutch fork is mucked?

Check the throw out bearing or U-joint, Carrier bearing........could almost be anything in the drive train.

I'd suspect the transmission internals last.

I've noticed the rear most joint does not hold grease much
It flings it all over the muffler and fuel tank... Unless that is normal operation?

Its normal for grease to be spattered on those parts if over greased. Throwout bearing issue would only happen when using the clutch/petal. Sounds like something is getting sloppy, or out of balance.

pilot bearing perhaps?
that has many miles onit still original

i sure hope its not the black cosmoline i coated half the shaft with to purty it up some you warned me about because it was looking tired and weathered under there :(

I suppose its possible for a pilot shaft bearing in the crank, if it is a bearing, and not an actually bushing thats pressed in there, i have yet to see it. I use change both the pilot bearing, and throwout bearing, plus resurface the flywheel on my manual toyota's when i did a clutch replacement job on them. Just anther reason why i prefer an automatic these days...no more burn't up pressure plate's while towing showing up after 75k miles.

The fork has been making an unpleasant squeak for quite a spell
Just thought it was finally tuckered out!

If no cracks, or galling, maybe needs some lubrication at the pivot point.

i have to figure out how far behind the boot that pivot point is and how accessible it may or may not be
its probably not the best idea to pull the boot back, stick in straw, and have at it with whatever spray-lube of choice going everywhere inside the housing

Its probably nothing. Just creeks and groans from an old vehicle.

Just keep driving it. If its a real problem, then it will manifest to make itself clear.
