2020 sr cold start rattle

Unless its a diesel powered vehicle, I never would buy someone else's used vehicle with over 50k miles, but thats just me.

I am not op but when I bought my 2020 Tacoma from a dealer it had 100k miles, (as is no warranty). Funny stuff the engine light turned on 5 minutes after driving off the lot with it. Had a bad cat converter.

I assume they knew about rattling issue but didn’t say anything or maybe I’m just plain unlucky. Ya live and learn right. But as long as this baby makes it to 300k miles I’ll be happy.
you bought it from a Toyota dealership?

bought mine at 49k, i had alot of gremlins i had to iron out and still have a lingering cam bolt that loosens up and creaks till i torque it down, drives me nuts, i think maybe the cam bolt or nut got striped out by a overzealous air impact wrench or something, the cam tabs got rolled and really dont have the money for a full LCA arm replacement, this was done at a Toyota stealership

Mine rattles no matter the outside temperature. Take a video and post it so we know it’s the same rattle cause when mine starts up angry it’s loud as hell. It’s more than disconcerning
that dont sound right mine makes all kinds of noises with a below freezing soak till the oil circulates maybe a minute or lesss, no rattles above 32 degrees maybe its a bad drive pulley or waterpump, mine are all original with about 156k miles

VVTI makes a classic noisy ratching clacking noise for 5 seconds, or so whenever cold started, or when the engine has been off for a few hrs. It's definitely a recognizable sound if you've heard one before. When cold the majority of oil is at the bottom of the engine, it takes a few seconds before enough oil pressure gets the oil up top. Newer engines use a solenoid for the vvti, which should be checked first....could be an easier fix. Otherwise the vvti cam gear needs to be rebuilt, or replaced. Its a fairly common failure if not doing regular oil changes. It's important to use a synthetic oil with a quality additive package.

Same. Tried just about everything. Toyota mechanics want $3K to replace VVTI, only if I tell them to, cause they can’t replicate and thus can’t say it will fix it.

All I can say, a number of these vvti engines, especially those 2.7's have had a history of vvti issues in the past. Just make sure your battery voltage is not getting weak, or the vvti filters aren't obstructed in anyway. A friend of mine thats a toyota tech seems to think the oils viscosity has something to do with these vvti problems if running a heavier viscosity oil than called for....says its important to run a high grade synthetic the manual calls for like the toyota motor oils that have their own additive package. At any rate once those vvti gear assemblies wear out for whatever reason they start making noise until they get enough oil pressure in them. If the vvti is the problem, and its not fixed, eventually its going to self destruct, and cause the engine to grenade.

i thot you said elsewhere it could be the power steering old fluid or pump causing cold-weather startup knocking sounds ??

i suspect it was the power steering since it was mostly coming from the front of the engine im not 100% sure although this morning after a 2 day below freezing cold soak (not started in 2 days to clarify) i did have some disturbing rattle/knock from the front of the engine until the oil circulated thru the motor, ive had 3 toyota truck 4 bangers 22,22RE,and this 2.7L and all has disturbing startup knocks and rattles with below freezing temps at startup, i had a 3.4l taco before this and really never heard this type of rattle with it, seems like this is just a 4 banger occurance to me, and after warmup drives fine and quiet too;)

I had the toyota 20r and 22re engines in pickups that I put a ton of miles on. The 22re had a couple of issues with shearing a crank key, and a timing chain tensioner issue, otherwise both didn't make a lot of hp, but were reliable. The 3.0 v6 in my 93 pickup was another good engine, but lacked hp. By 2001 I needed another bigger full size truck for the business like the chevy's I had, so I went with the tundra which put those gm trucks to shame.

heres a great explanation on the cold start rattles, at the end of the video this guy says its not worth ripping apart the engine to rectify the issue, i agree and am not going to lose any sleep over this anymore
