Does Remote Start require a Remote Connect Subscription?

I found the following instructions for remote start

Press the LOCK button on the remote.
Press the LOCK button a second time within 1 second.
Press the LOCK button again, this time holding it for 3 seconds. The vehicle will start.

I couldn't get it to work until I set up my vehicle in the Remote Connect app. Now it works.

Question is, when my "free" subscription ends in 12 months does the Remote Start feature using my Key Fob stop working?

Don’t think so. Assuming your referring to your new truck?
My 2017 has Factory Remote Start,,no subscription needed!
New ones have Apple Play, right ? Did you have to put the App on your phone?
I would think you set up your phone via blue tooth on the truck and that’s all

Yup, the 2022. It has Apple Carplay.
It wouldn't work until I put the app on my phone and registered my vheicle. Once I did then the keyfob started to work for the remote start. It doesn't seem like the two should be connected but somehow they are.

New here. Just got my 22 Barcelona Red SR5. I have an android and installed the Android Auto app. What do I need to download in order to get the auto start to work? Tried the press twice and hold but it didnt work.

Thanks, Tony
Welcome to the site Tony.

I have a 2022 TRD OR. I had to download the Toyota app on my phone and create an account. I then added my Truck using the VIN number and it gave me a verification code to verfiy ownership. To enter the code follow these steps.

Turn on your Toyota vehicle and use its Audio Multimedia touchscreen and perform the following steps:

1. Select "Menu"
2. Select "Apps"
3. Select "Communications"
4. Select "Remote Connect Authorization"
5. Enter the Authorization Code

Once it was setup I coould then use my key to start the truck.

I just glanced at an article over the weekend that said that Toyota remote start did go to a subscription service. I'm pretty sure the article was on Google. I wasn't that interested in it as mine don't have remote start so I don't know all the ins and outs. Could be if you start from app on you're phone you need a subscription but if you just push the buttons on you're key you don't.

My 2021 worked with just the key fob at the dealership before I even took possession. The sales guy took us out to look at it and showed us a bunch of the bells and whistles on the truck. I tried the app but deleted it. Never bothered with setting it up or connecting it to the truck.

But as far as a 2021 TRD Off Road, remote start with the key fob works without having to set up the app on your phone.
