2020 sr cold start rattle

Come on, you must have techs that must specialize in other brands. I know today if you can use your computer, and scan tool, your considered an auto tech. Currently these techs are taught just to be a parts replacer. Gone are the days of being an actual wrench. Still any shop worth its weight has to be decent, or they wouldn't be here long.
I use to do business with the owner/president of the toyota dealer here since the late 80's. He's told me a couple times they don't make a big profit selling vehicles....it's their service that keeps them going, and their not afraid to charge hefty labor rates either...you get what you pay for.. They have a wall full of presidents awards for their service every year.

Weirdness, it is!
I never thot about that and diagnosing diy the rattle on the relatives gen2 in the cold temp starts

I thought it was the engine oil ow20 and was going to check the oil control valve filter thing on the side when it starts again

Power steering pump???
Does your rattle go away after it warms up?

The ps fluid in this gen2 is still factory fill
But it has been rattling since the 60k miles were turnt
just turkey baster it out, reservoir when the engine is cold and replace with DEX II/III ATF few times, i only get about 9 oz.s out at every oil change and replace it 5k miles along with the oil change, dont change the PS fluid when hot and new fluid is cold cause the PS fluid expands like ATF fluid when hot and wont get a proper level.

@JayQQ97

FWIW, Toyota does recommend a PS fluid change at 100 Kmiles.

If the PS fluid is dark like burgundy wine or darker.......its is past due for changing.

It's the vvt-i system thats failed internally. It has to come apart...keep running it this way, and eventually catastrophic engine failure will result. Why does the op keep asking the same question expecting a different answer?

They do. I've spoke with a friend of mine that services these issues. Its well known.
I’ve heard a lot of people take them in into Toyota and they can’t find the solution and when they do swap parts, it still doesn’t fix the issue. That’s why I am waiting for someone to actually say what exactly it is. How much would it be to fix it at Toyota? What exactly did your friend say it is? What part. Thanks

As far as the repair, and cost...I'm not a toyota dealer. It's up to that dealer to charge accordingly to what they need to fix the problem. I can't speak for them, i'm only relaying what that cold start engine noise usually is. Any toyota dealer thats heard, and seen enough of those engines, should know immediately what it is....it's not like it's their first big job.
Btw, have you checked online doing a search for that issue? I'd be willing to even bet the video whore the car nut guy is, he likely has a video out by now for this noise.

Jay, if you read this, your the video king around here. See if you can find an online YouTube, or some other video of a toyota's vvt-i system for this op, and post it.

I took it to the local Toyota dealer today.
They recommend replacing camshaft gear assembly. Quoted me $2300 with a, “We think this will solve the issue.”

I guess they're shotgunning the entire cam/vvt-i gear assembly out. Its usually an actuator issue, but thats one nearly sure way of fixing it.

If its only for 30 seconds, dont fix it keep on driving, mine makes all kinds of noises when its really cold never caused me any concerns or breakdowns, keep on driving

You are aware if a pin shears in that vvti gear assembly , your engine will grenade if you keep running it this way.

mines been making cold weather rattling noises since 2013= 11 years no signs of a grenading most times this happens only under 32 degrees at start up, once the engine warms up the oil circulating thru the engine no noise at all. i admit its a little disconcerning hearing that rattle for 30 seconds but its a normal occurances in these engines, ive had 22r and 22re 4 bangers had the same cold weather rattling both clocked well over 200k miles.

I've had 22r and 22re engines back in the 80's that accumulated high mileage, but neither had the vvt-i system. Neither made any strange sounds on startup either. Noise on your truck might be something else like the timing chain, or the tensioner....I've not heard a vvt-i failure going that long without causing big issues.

Mine rattles no matter the outside temperature. Take a video and post it so we know it’s the same rattle cause when mine starts up angry it’s loud as hell. It’s more than disconcerning

Was thinking if the op's truck is a 2020 the engine is covered by something like a 5-6 year, or 50-60k powertrain warranty.

I am not op but when I bought my 2020 Tacoma from a dealer it had 100k miles, (as is no warranty). Funny stuff the engine light turned on 5 minutes after driving off the lot with it. Had a bad cat converter.

I assume they knew about rattling issue but didn’t say anything or maybe I’m just plain unlucky. Ya live and learn right. But as long as this baby makes it to 300k miles I’ll be happy.
