a new chapter begins... the road to 400k

Well damned be the guy that over torqued this 60k miles ago
I could not get it to budge
Rust should not be much of an issue or I cannot see it
Soak in pb blaster and get air impact out on Saturday and save 106$ minus cost of diff gear oil
Main thing is to try not to strip the plug out at any cost, then it will be a major pita. You gotta be dealing with mostly hacks whoever does your work...you must gravitate toward them to have so much grief. They probably slapped that plug in with a impact wrench set to 90 ft lbs.

the socket i was using with the 24" breaker ALREADY slipped and stripped the edge a bitty :(
if I cannot whip it off with the air impact then its only 106$ and a 100 mile drive north to the family yota dealer + a new 6$ plug to replace the 26.5yr original filler plug
local corporate dealers here want nearly 200$ to change and suck out rear diff the last time i checked... they don't even crack the drain plug, they just put a suction tube into the filler and suck it all out

i reckon i should NOT jump to the conclusion that it was the shop in Chicago that changed the gear oil 60k ago
it certainly coulda been one of those 2 yota shops in Maine i stopped at for oil/lube/filter back in May that were checking fluid levels that popped that filler and overtorqued it back on there
i have no clues what they do anymore whilst i do not have eyes onit

Thats not the greatest to suck out the fluid, you want to clean the drain plug of any metal...plugs are usually magnetic, plus those suction hoses don't get all the nasty stuff way at the bottom that collects.

they call it a rear diff flush or fluid exchange and want 200$

The only thing their going to flush is your wallet, which all these guys are doing a very good job already..

if the spare tire were to be installed this is in no way a DIY for me to get at the rear diff plugs because no clearance squirming on my broken shoulder and i do not have an open pit such as at the quikLubes. it takes much effort to lower the spare with that take-down-tool

Air impact at 90psi zip fill plug right off.

GLA
Went at the diff drain plug with the 24" breaker
I barely coughed and it broke free with near zero efforts
Wotn tarnation!

And you thought this was going to beyond your skill level.
Not skill level per se
I learnt all this gear box lube change at 17 on my 70s Celica at the lube shop where I had open pit at my disposal after hours
It's strength and mobility issues now

Torque both plugs to about 39ftlbs
Finished off with a near full coating of fresh black cosmoline on axle housing and 3rd member
How long until it dulls and or wears off the time will only tell

Rear differential usually takes about 3-4 qts. The front one around a qt. or so.
Your old fluid doesn't look all that bad. I've seen worse in 30k miles.

i certainly hope y'all enjoyed todays taco adventures
project: rear diff gear oil change
